Fast Start Propels Women's Basketball Past Wheaton in Regular Season Finale, 63-44

NORTON, Mass.—Sophomore Rylie Rosenberg (New Rochelle, N.Y.) finished with 14 points and six rebounds and visiting Babson College built an 18-point first-quarter lead to ease past Wheaton College, 63-44, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon inside Emerson Gymnasium.

Babson, which has won eight of its last nine games, ends the regular season at 17-8 overall and 9-2 in conference play while securing the number two seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament. Wheaton dropped its seventh game in a row and sees its year come to a close at 5-20 overall and 1-10 in league play.

Sophomore Julia St. Laurent (Greenland, N.H.) provided 10 points and three assists, while classmate Mary Kate Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) scored a career-high nine points to go along with seven rebounds and a game-high four steals to pace the Beavers. First-year Sophie Mahar (Wakefield, R.I.) scored a season-high seven points and senior Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.) grabbed a team-high eight boards in the win.

Senior Regan Keyer (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led all players with 17 points on 8-of-20 shooting and junior Cheyenne Colbert (Brookline, N.H.) posted a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to lead the Lyons.

St. Laurent contributed six points and four different players scored as the Green and White opened a 14-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest. First-year Alyssa Hopps (Quincy, Mass.) converted a three-point play to make it 17-2, classmate Molly Donovan (Duxbury, Mass.) followed with a layup in transition and Rosenberg buried a three-pointer extending the margin to 22-4 with 1:20 left in the first.

Despite making just two shots over the first eight minutes of the second quarter, the Beavers led 34-15 at the break and got a pair of three-pointers around two free throws by St. Laurent to stretch their cushion to 42-18 with 7:04 to go in the third. Mahar scored four points late in the period and Babson scored on four straight possessions to start the fourth to take its largest lead of the afternoon at 57-31 on a jumper by St. Laurent with 7:08 left.

The Beavers shot just 30.1 percent from the floor and 52.6 percent (10-of-19) at the free throw line but knocked down nine three-pointers and matched their season low with eight turnovers while finishing with a 51-43 edge on the glass. The Lyons shot 31.1 percent and were just 3-of-21 (14.3 percent) from beyond the arc in the loss.
