Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Hoops Extends Winning Streak to Seven with Key NEWMAC Victory at Clark, 65-56

WORCESTER, Mass.—Graduate student Emily Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) led three players in double figures and Babson College opened the third quarter with a 15-2 run on the way to defeating Clark University, 65-56, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon inside the Kneller Athletic Center.

With its seventh consecutive victory, Babson improves to 16-7 overall and takes over sole possession of second place in the conference at 8-1. Clark has dropped two of its last three contests to slip to 16-7 overall and 7-2 in the NEWMAC.

Flynn also contributed nine rebounds, three assists and two steals, sophomore Rylie Rosenberg (New Rochelle, N.Y.) scored 13 points and first-year Alyssa Hopps (Quincy, Mass.) provided 12 points, five boards and two blocks to pace the Beavers. Senior Allessia Carlo (Carmel, N.Y.) contributed eight points, five assists and three steals, while sophomore Mary Kate Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) tied for team-high honors with nine rebounds.

Sophomore Cyriah Coleman (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored a game-high 19 points and junior Olivia Shipley (Castleton, Vt.) added 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go along with six rebounds and two blocks to lead the Cougars. Fellow junior Emma Drefs (Ridgecrest, Calif.) led all players with 10 boards in the loss.

The Green and White trailed 32-25 at the break but got points from five different players, including a pair of three-pointers by Carlo, to go in front 40-34 on a free throw by first-year Devon Burke (Newtonville, Mass.) with 1:15 to go in the third. Clark snapped a field goal drought of more than seven minutes on a triple by Coleman to get back within three, but Rosenberg and Hopps combined for eight of Babson's first 12 points in the fourth to grab its largest lead of the game at 52-41 on a jumper by senior Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.) with 4:51 remaining.

Coleman went on a personal 7-0 run to cut the Cougars' deficit to 54-50 with 2:38 to play, but Flynn answered with a layup on the ensuing possession and Hopps grabbed an offensive rebound and converted the put-back as the Beavers regained an eight-point lead with 1:36 left. Rosenberg made it 60-52 with a wide open layup with 55 seconds remaining and the visitors went 5-of-6 at the charity stripe over the final 31 seconds to put the game away.

Babson jumped out to an 11-3 lead and led by as many as nine late in the opening stanza only to see Clark begin the second with a 12-0 spurt to built a 23-17 advantage on a layup by Shipley at the 6:20 mark. Coleman scored four straight points and junior Catherine Antwi (Lowell, Mass.) drilled a three-pointer to give the hosts their biggest lead of the contest at 32-23 with 2:32 to go before halftime.

The Beavers shot 50 percent in the fourth quarter and 42.4 percent for the game while outscoring the hosts 42-32 in the paint and finishing with a 44-39 edge on the glass. The Cougars, who scored 25 points off turnovers, shot just 32.9 percent and were 5-of-25 (20 percent) from three-point range in the loss.
