Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 11 Men’s Ice Hockey Nips UMass Boston, 2-1

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Senior Egan Schmitt (Schuylerville, N.Y.) played a part in both scores with a goal and an assist as No. 11 Babson College nipped the University of Massachusetts Boston, 2-1, in a Little East Conference (LEC) men's ice hockey game Friday evening inside the Babson Skating Center.

With the victory, Babson has won seven of its last eight games to improve to 17-3-2 overall and 12-2-1 in the LEC. UMass Boston had a four-game unbeaten streak snapped and dropped to 13-8-1 overall and 8-6-1 in conference play.

Senior Cam Joslin (Cohasset, Mass.) scored the go-ahead goal in the second period for the Beavers, and senior Will Holland (Charlotte, N.C.), junior Jimmy Fallon (Milton, Mass.) and sophomore Raphael Marcoux (Quebec City, Que.) registered assists in the win. Senior Nate Mueller (Rogers, Minn.) finished with 24 saves in goal for the Green and White.

Sophomore Michael Lynch (Stoneham, Mass.) scored the lone goal for the Beacons with an assist from junior Chris Repmann (Middletown, N.J.). First-year Alex Koenig (Manhattanville Beach, Calif.) made 29 saves in goal in the loss.

The teams traded goals two minutes apart in the first period. Repmann stole the puck in his defensive zone and broke up ice on an odd-man rush, but his pass in the Babson zone was broken up by the Babson defense. Lynch picked up the loose puck as a trailer and ripped a shot past Mueller to give the Beacons the 1-0 lead at 12:05.

Babson tied the score less than two minutes later when Holland dumped the puck from mid-ice into the left corner and Schmitt chased it down and fired a one-timer from the left circle past Koenig inside the far post at 14:03.

The visitors had an excellent chance to regain the lead with nine minutes to go in the second period when senior Jack Ford (Middletown, Del.) snuck behind the defense for a breakaway, but Mueller denied him with a glove save on his backhander.

The Beavers took the lead with three minutes remaining in the second with what turned out to be the game-winner. Marcoux took a shot from the right point that went wide of the goal, but Joslin collected the rebounds off the back boards and stuffed it inside the left post at 16:58.

UMass Boston had a pair of power play opportunities in the third period but could not convert, and despite out-shooting the Beavers 7-5 in the final frame and pulling Koenig for the final minute, Babson held on for the win.

The hosts finished with a 31-25 advantage in shots on goal. UMB has 0-for-3 with the man advantage while Babson came up empty on its two attempts.

Both teams are back in action Saturday at 4 p.m. as the Beavers host UMass Dartmouth and the Beacons travel to Southern Maine.
