Baroni Stays Hot as No. 17 Field Hockey Downs Ithaca on Senior Day, 7-0

BABSON PARK, Mass. — Junior Penny Baroni (Dennis, Mass.) scored three goals and added an assist for her third straight game with a hat trick as No. 17 Babson College shut down Ithaca College, 7-0, in non-conference field hockey action on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

With the victory, the Beavers extended their winning streak to four games and improved to 12-6 overall, while Ithaca winds up its season with a 10-7 record.

Seniors Grace Mullaney (Boxford, Mass.) and Helen DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.), sophomore Kayla Rice (Walpole, Mass.) and first-year Kate Schneider (Walpole, Mass.) all scored for the Beavers, and juniors Charlotte Roe (Wayne, Pa.) and Taylor Shoflick (Greenwood Village, Colo.) along with first-year Julia Krepelka (Arlington, Mass.) chipped in with one assist each. First-year goalie Carly Spinner (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) earned the win in her first collegiate start and sophomore Madison Tibbals (Gorham, Maine) made one save between the pipes in the second half.

Senior Maeve Clark (Beverly, Mass.) made three saves in 36 minutes of action in the Ithaca goal and classmate Abby Cannon (East Amherst, N.Y.) did not allow a goal in her 24 minutes in the crease.

The Green and White took control of the game from the start, scoring three goals in the opening stanza. Baroni got the party started on a penalty corner in the fifth minute, taking a pass from Krepelka on the left side of the shooting circle and lifting a shot over a sliding goalie for a 1-0 lead.

Mullaney and Schneider notched goals 48 seconds apart later in the quarter. Mullaney tipped a shot by Baroni from the right side into the back of the net in the 14th minute and Schneider buried a shot amid a scrum in front of the goal in the 15th minute to give Babson a 3-0 lead after one period.

After a scoreless second quarter, the Beavers started to pull away in the third. Baroni notched her second of the game on a penalty corner four minutes into the third quarter, blasting a shot from the left side inside the near post. She rounded off her hat trick when a Babson pass bounced off someone's foot and ended up on Baroni's stick in front of the net and she whacked a shot inside the right post to make it 5-0.

Rice produced her first goal of the season early in the fourth quarter, firing home a rebound after Clark made a stop on a shot by Baroni. DiGiovanni rounded out the scoring in the 51st minute with a goal from the left off a feed from Shoflick.

Babson finished with a 20-2 advantage in total shots and 11-2 in shots on target, and had an 8-1 margin in penalty corners.

The Beavers wrap up the regular season with a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match-up at Wheaton on Saturday at noon in Norton, Mass.
