NEW LONDON, Conn.—Junior Mia Xerras (Charlotte, N.C.) scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the second half to help Connecticut College defeat visiting Babson College, 59-51, in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon inside Luce Fieldhouse.
Babson, which had its three-game winning streak snapped, is now 7-5 on the year. Connecticut College has won five of its last six contests to improve to 7-4 overall.
Graduate student
Emily Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) scored 18 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists, while sophomore
Rylie Rosenberg (New Rochelle, N.Y.) added 11 points to lead the Beavers. Fellow sophomore
Julia St. Laurent (Greenland, N.H.) chipped in with nine points and classmate
Mary Kate Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) led all players with 11 boards and a career-high three blocks in the loss.
Xerras finished 7-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, while sophomore Sydney Marshall (Enfield, Conn.) contributed 10 points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks to pace the Camels. First-year Sofia Tavarez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) led all players with five assists to go along with six points and five rebounds in the victory.
Down 8-6 midway through the opening frame,
Emily Flynn canned three consecutive three-pointers to give the Green and White a 15-8 advantage, its largest of the game, with 2:46 remaining in the period. Two free throws by Rosenberg made it 17-11 and St. Laurent followed up a triple by senior
Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.) to keep the hosts in front 24-20 with 7:45 to go in the second quarter.
Connecticut College scored eight of the next 10 points and held the Beavers without a field goal over the next seven-plus minutes before senior
Allessia Carlo (Carmel, N.Y.) hit a short jumper to break the drought and send the teams into halftime tied at 28.
The lead changed hands nine times in the third quarter with the teams never separated by more than three points. Flynn scored Babson's final six points of the frame including a three-point play for a 41-40 with 2:00 to go before Xerras knocked down back-to-back jumpers over the final 34 seconds of the stanza to put the Camels in front for good 44-41 entering the fourth.
Xerras drilled a three-pointer following an offensive rebound to stretch the margin to 52-45 at the 8:01 mark before both teams went cold offensively. The Green and White got as close as 52-49 on a driving layup by Rosenberg with 4:53 remaining, but Tavarez answered with a bucket on the ensuing possession and Babson was held scoreless over the next four minutes as the Connecticut College extend its lead to as many as 10 in the final minute despite going 5-of-15 at the charity stripe in the period.
The Beavers were limited to a season-worst 26.6 percent shooting and went just 1-for-19 from three-point range over the final three quarters after hitting five triples in the first. The Camels shot 37.9 percent from the floor and finished with a 51-40 advantage on the glass.
Babson is back in action on Wednesday at 3 p.m. when it travels to Norwich, while Connecticut College hosts Clark on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
