Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 10 Men’s Ice Hockey Downs Williams to Claim Oswego Holiday Classic Title, 4-2

OSWEGO, N.Y.— Senior Ian Driscoll (Middleton, Mass.) was named tournament Most Valuable Player and No. 10 Babson College scored three third-period goals on the way to defeating Williams College, 4-2, to capture the championship of the Oswego State Holiday Classic Saturday afternoon at the Deborah F. Stanley Arena.

With the victory, Babson extended its unbeaten streak to four games and moved to 9-1-2 on the season while Williams, which lost to the Beavers by the same score at the Babson Skating Center back on November 29, fell to 3-6-1 overall.

Driscoll, who finished the two-day affair with two goals and three assists, scored once for the Beavers and was joined on the All-Tournament team by seniors Nate Mueller (Rogers, Minn.) and Charlie Andriole (Branford, Conn.) and junior Jimmy Fallon (Milton, Mass.). Mueller made 14 saves in goal while Andriole was joined in the scoring column by seniors Ryan Murphy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) and Brendan Kennedy (Georgetown, Ont.). Fallon produced an assist to finish the tourney with a goal and four helpers, and senior Cam Joslin (Cohasset, Mass.) and sophomores Evan Brown (Little Silver, N.J.) and Raphael Marcoux (Quebec City, Que.) also collected assists in the win.

First-year Gates Omicioli (East Greenwich, R.I.) led the Ephs with a goal and an assist while sophomore Jake McManus (Winthrop, Mass.) scored once and senior Connor Berg (Natick, Mass.) and first-year Jackson Krill (Anmore, B.C.) each had one assist. Sophomore Kael DePape (Yorkton, Sask.) made 28 saves in goal in the setback.

Driscoll scored the only goal of the first two periods at 7:25 of the first frame. After Williams won a defensive zone face-off, a clearing pass was intercepted in the slot by Driscoll who scored with a wrist shot up high glove side.

Williams needed just 54 seconds at the start of the third period to tie the score. Berg picked up a loose puck in the right circle and fed Omicioli, who beat Mueller blocker side inside left post.

The Beavers pulled ahead two minutes later with a pair of goals just a minute apart. Babson converted an odd-man rush when Brown hit Andriole streaking into the zone for a one-timer from the top of the left circle to put Babson 2-1 at 2:55, and 60 seconds later Murphy stole the puck in the neutral zone and ripped a blast from the top of left circle over the right shoulder of the Williams goalie at 3:55 for a 3-1 advantage.

The Ephs pulled to within one with a power play goal at 8:52 as McManus buried a one-timer from inside the left circle off a centering pass from Omicioli. Kennedy tacked on an insurance goal for Babson at 13:26 when Kennedy jammed home the rebound after a Marcoux blast from the left point.

Babson outshot the Ephs 32-16, including 11-6 in the third period. Williams went 1-for-2 on the power play and held the Green and White scoreless on three attempts with the man advantage.

The Beavers will play Little East Conference (LEC) games the rest of the regular season, beginning Friday against Plymouth State at the Babson Skating Center at 7 p.m. Williams plays a NESCAC game Friday at Wesleyan at 7 p.m. in Middletown, Conn.
