BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore
Julia St. Laurent (Greenland, N.H.) scored 12 of her career-high 14 points in the second half as Babson College erased a 12-point deficit before falling 61-55 to No. 23 WBCA Trinity College in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday evening inside Staake Gymnasium.
Babson, which lost for just the second time over its last six contests, slips to 8-6 overall. Trinity has won two straight games on the heels of back-to-back losses to improve to 12-4 on the year.
St. Laurent finished 6-of-11 from the floor and grabbed five rebounds, while sophomore
Rylie Rosenberg (New Rochelle, N.Y.) contributed 11 points and season highs of seven boards, four assists and four steals to lead the Beavers. Classmate
Alessa Mendoza (Yonkers, N.Y.) scored nine points and senior
Allessia Carlo (Carmel, N.Y.) dished out a game-high five assists in the loss.
Junior Marlo Simms (Decatur, Ga.) posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, classmate Kiki Fossbender (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored 16 points and fellow junior Avery Marzo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) contributed 14 points, six boards and three steals to pace the Bantams.
The Green and White led by as many as five in the early going and were up 14-13 after one before Trinity opened the second quarter with an 11-2 run that included five points from Simms to grab a 24-16 lead with 5:57 to go before halftime. Simms answered a jumper by Carlo with back-to-back hoops extending the margin to 10, and Marzo converted a layup with 1:11 left in the period to give the Bantams their largest advantage of the night at 32-20.
Rosenberg beat the first-half buzzer with a three-pointer and St. Laurent and sophomore
Mary Kate Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) followed with hoops to cut the Babson deficit to 32-27 just over three minutes into the third. The hosts got within three on a layup by St. Laurent in the closing seconds of the period and pulled even at 42-42 thanks to a Rosenberg triple 90 seconds into the fourth period.
Mendoza answered a three-pointer by Trinity senior Melissa Whitmore (Hanover, N.H.) with baskets on consecutive possessions to give the Green and White its first lead since early in the second quarter at 46-45 with 6:33 remaining. The next three minutes featured two ties and three lead changes before Simms put the visitors ahead for good with 3:29 to go.
Marzo drilled a left-wing three-pointer on the following possession to make it 56-51, and Fossbender answered a hoop by St. Laurent with a driving layup to regain a five-point edge with 1:14 to play. Babson got back within three on a bucket by first-year
Alyssa Hopps (Quincy, Mass.) with 41 ticks left but Marzo grabbed an offensive rebound on the Bantams next possession allowing Fossbender to seal the win with two free throws with 10.3 seconds remaining.
The Beavers, who shot 33.3 percent, turned 19 offensive rebounds and scored 19 points off turnovers. Trinity shot 43.9 percent from the floor and outscored the Green and White 42-28 in the paint and 8-3 at the free throw line.
Babson returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Springfield at 1 p.m., while the Bantams travel to Amherst on Friday at 7 p.m.
