NEW LONDON, Conn.—Senior
Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) scored a game-high 17 points and visiting Babson College built a 31-point first-half lead on the way to defeating the Coast Guard Academy, 89-41, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon inside Roland Hall.
Babson, which snapped a four-game skid, improves to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Coast Guard has dropped its last six contests to fall to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in the NEWMAC.
O'Toole finished 7-of-8 from the floor and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, while first-year
Robby Fiore (Acton, Mass.) scored a season-high 16 points while dishing out four assists to pace the Beavers. Fellow rookie
Thomas Ferdinando (Andover, Mass.) contributed 13 points, four boards, four assists and three steals, while sophomores
Timmy Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) and
Logan Murphy (Sandwich, Mass.) added nine and eight points, respectively.
Senior Elijah Parent (Bristol, Conn.) scored 13 points and classmate Luke Farrell (Ortley Beach, N.J.) provided 12 points, five rebounds and four blocks to lead the Bears.
The Green and White scored on eight of its first 10 possessions to build a 19-5 lead on a bucket by sophomore
Theo Lamb (San Francisco, Calif.) less than six minutes into the contest. Ferdinando broke a four-minute scoring draught by converting a feed from senior
Tyler Lauder (Malvern, Pa.) that ignited a 22-3 spurt that included nine points from Fiore and seven from O'Toole to extend the margin to 41-10 with 3:13 to go before halftime.
Parent and Farrell combined for nine straight Coast Guard points as the hosts trimmed their deficit to 45-20 at the break only to see the Beavers begin the second half with a 14-3 burst. Murphy got things started with six straight points and Ferdinando sandwiched a pair of triples around a layup by O'Toole to make it 59-23 with 15:22 to play.
Farrell brought the Bears as close as 67-38 with 10:17 to go, but the Green and White answered with 12 straight points, including eight of the span of five possessions by O'Toole as the lead stretched back out to 79-38 with 6:55 left.
The Beavers shot 50 percent from the floor and 46.7 percent (14-of-30) from beyond the arc while outscoring Coast Guard 38-16 in the paint and finishing with a 48-32 edge on the glass. The Bears shot just 25 percent from the field and were limited to a season-low six three-pointers in the loss.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Babson travels to Springfield for a 1 p.m. tipoff, while Coast Guard visits Clark at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are now 66-29 all-time against Coast Guard and Saturday's winning margin is the largest by either team in the all-time series.
• Saturday's 48-point victory is Babson's biggest since beating Worcester State 101-52 in the Babson Invitational on November 18, 2017.
• The winning team has now scored at least 76 points in 20 of the last 21 games between Babson and Coast Guard.
• The Beavers are 7-2 this season when putting at least three players in double figures and are 14-1 over the last two winters when making at least 10 three-pointers.
