Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and senior
Alex Michelotti (Englewood, Colo.) and sophomore
Charlotte Roe (Wayne, Pa.) added a goal and an assist each as Babson College rolled past Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 5-0, in non-conference field hockey action Wednesday afternoon at the SJC Athletics Complex.
With the win, the Beavers improved to 4-0 on the season while the Monks dropped to 1-2.
Junior
Emma Smith (Kenilworth, Ill.) chipped in with her first goal of the season and junior
Ashley Braren (Westwood, Mass.) added an assist for the Beavers. First-year
Madison Tibbals (Gorham, Maine) made three saves in goal for her first career shutout.
Junior Kimberley McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) had a busy day in goal and made a career-high 13 saves for the Monks, who were outshot 30-5.
Babson took the lead 10 minutes into the game following a penalty corner. Sophomore
Penny Baroni (Dennis, Mass.) received the insertion and passed to DiGiovanni, who dribbled to her right to create space and sent a long shot through traffic and into the goal for her fourth marker of the season.
The Green and White doubled their lead in the second quarter following another penalty corner. After a shot by Babson shot was blocked, Smith collected the loose ball and spun around before depositing the ball into the left side of the cage for a 2-0 lead.
Despite a 17-1 shot advantage for Babson in the first half, the Monks stayed in the game due to eight saves by McLaughlin. The Beavers started to pull way with a third goal in the third quarter, when Michelotti knocked in a rebound after yet another McLaughlin save.
The visitors put the game away with a pair of fourth-quarter strikes. Roe redirected a pass from Michelotti near the right post into an open net in the 48th minute for her first of the season, and DiGiovanni rounded out the scoring with her second of the game and fifth of the season in the 56th minute with an assist from Roe.
The Beavers are on the road again on Sunday, traveling to No. 1 Middlebury for a 12 p.m. match-up between two the top three ranked teams in Division III. Saint Joe's plays again on Saturday at Regis at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers have won all seven career meetings between the two programs dating back to 2019, including six by shutout.
• DiGiovanni has scored at least one goal in all four games this season, recording the 11th multi-goal game of her career.
• Roe has two goals and two assists in her career, all coming against Saint Joe's; Michelotti has a goal and two assists in her career vs. SJC; and Smith has tallied both of her career goals against the Monks.
• Babson is 46-3 in weekday games over the past four seasons.
