Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 5 Men's Soccer Rallies for 1-1 Draw with UMass Boston

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Alexander Yablonovskiy (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) tied the game with a 61st-minute penalty kick to help No. 5 Babson College earn a 1-1 draw with visiting UMass Boston in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

Babson, which extended its unbeaten streak to 13 matches, is 1-0-1 on the year. UMass Boston is now 0-0-2 while running its unbeaten streak to 17 games dating back to last season.

Senior goalkeeper Derek Polanco (Verona, N.J.) finished with two saves for the Beavers and remained unbeaten in three career starts.

Junior John Arruda (Espirito Santo, Brazil) scored his first goal of the season and senior Ryan Lima (Minas Gerais, Brazil) recorded an assist for the Beacons, who got XX saves from graduate student goalkeeper JJ Devine (Halifax, Mass.).

UMass Boston took advantage of a defensive miscue by Babson to take the lead in the 23rd minute. A long clearance up by senior Luan Cruz (Everett, Mass.) was misplayed allowing Lima to streak up the right side and pull Polanco off his line before playing it across the top of the six-yard box for Arruda's sliding finish at the left post.

First-year Adam Stetson (Granby, Mass.) saw his header sail just over the crossbar in the waning seconds of the first half and sophomore Maxi Martinez (Miami, Fla.) missed wide of the left post with another header off a corner in the 56th minute before Yablonovskiy pulled the Green and White level with his penalty in the 61st minute following a Beacons' hand ball in the box.

Neither side was able to find a game winner over the final half hour as UMass Boston first-year Gustavo De Paula (Framingham, Mass.) saw his blast from the left side of the box ricochet wide in the 67th minute, while Martinez's sliding attempt following a service by first-year Blake Miller (Odessa, Fla.) rolled just wide of the right post in the 77th minute.

The Beavers finished with 14-7 edge in shots and attempted six of the nine corner kicks in the game. The teams also combined for 33 fouls.

Babson returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Wesleyan at 11 a.m., while UMass Boston faces Occidental on Monday at 12 p.m.
