Sisk, Reading Score Twice During Eight-Goal Run As Beavers Erase 7-4 Third Quarter Deficit

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Sam Sisk (Madison, Conn.) scored twice during a decisive eight-goal run in the second half to help second-seeded Babson College rally to defeat top-seeded Springfield College, 12-10, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament final on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

With the win, Babson improved to 13-5 overall while capturing its third consecutive NEWMAC Tournament championship. Springfield, which was hosting the title game for the first time since 2017, sees its year come to a close at 10-7.

Sophomore Camden Matthews (Westford, Mass.) had two goals and one assist, junior Will Reading (Southlake, Texas) scored twice, won 12-of-24 face-offs and led all players with eight ground balls, and classmate Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.) contributed a goal and an assist as well four ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Beavers. Graduate student Tripp Clark (Byfield, Mass.) scooped up seven ground ball and had two forced turnovers, while senior Alex Fascilla (Huntington, N.Y.) made 11 saves in the victory.

Sophomore Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) led all players with six points on three goals and three assists, while junior Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.) finished with three goals to pace the Pride. Senior Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) won 13-of-23 face-offs, graduate student Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.) tied for game-high honors with eight ground balls and two caused turnovers, and senior Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) stopped 13 shots in defeat.

Goals by Sisk and sophomore Seamus Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.) gave the Green and White a 2-1 lead late in the first quarter, but Springfield got a pair of tallies by Degnan and markers by Webb and senior Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) to build a 5-3 advantage with 2:42 to go in the second. Quirk made a save just before halftime and stopped another shot less than a minute into the third quarter before sophomore Bryan Stensrud (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) converted a feed from Degnan to give the Pride a 6-3 edge, its largest of the game, at the 12:21 mark.

Matthews and Degnan traded scores three minutes apart midway through the third before the Beavers started their run with goals by Smith and graduate student Jacob Tauss (San Marcos, Calif.) to pull within one with 1:59 left in the stanza. Sisk, who was selected as the NEWMAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, scored back-to-back goals to start the fourth quarter and Reading won the ensuing face-off and beat Quirk to make it three tallies in 57 seconds and a 9-7 advantage for the Green and White.

Sophomore Luke Wang (Simsbury, Conn.) and Reading scored 10 seconds apart following two straight turnovers by the Pride extending the margin to 11-7 at the 10:28 mark, and Matthews put away a feed from Smith for a man-up goal to make it 12-7 with 9:12 left. Springfield closed to within two on a marker by graduate student Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) with 1:57 to go and regained possession on the ensuing face-off, but Fascilla made a huge stop on Burgmyer with 1:07 remaining and Babson was able to run out the clock.
