Beavers Finish Team Portion of Schedule at 15-7 After Third NCAA Tournament Berth in Five Years

MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—Senior Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and junior Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) registered victories in both singles and doubles, but the 14th-ranked Babson College women's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 13 Johns Hopkins University in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday afternoon inside Middlebury College's Nelson Recreation Center.

With the victory, Johns Hopkins won its fifth straight match to improve to 14-7 overall and earned a third-round match against No. 3 Middlebury on Sunday. The Beavers, which had won six of their previous eight matches, wind up the team portion of their season with a 15-7 overall record.

Babson captured the first doubles set when Olivia and Matia breezed past junior Jay Xiao (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and sophomore Lia Melvin (Joppa, Md.) in the top flight, 6-0. The Blue Jays came back to earn the doubles point when sophomore Sydney Langer (Short Hills, N.J.) and first-year Sahana Madala (Frontenac, Mo.) downed sophomore Dana Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) and first-year Mia Sorrentino (Miami, Fla.) at number three, 6-2, and junior Kamila Wong (Palo Alto, Calif) and first-year Ava Li (Forest Hills, N.Y.) edged sophomore Chaniel Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and first-year Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) at number two, 6-4.

Matia Cristiani put the Beavers on the board with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over first-year Sahana SanJeev (Lutz, Fla.) at number two singles. The Blue Jays answered with their first singles win by Li at number four over Chaniel Soffer, 6-2, 7-5.

Olivia Soffer overcame a setback in the first set at number one singles to win a second-set tiebreaker on the way to a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 verdict over Langer. Melvin countered Olivia's win with a three-set triumph over Alessandra Cristiani at number three, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, giving the Blue Jays a 3-2 lead.

Madala finished off the victory for Johns Hopkins with a 6-4, 6-2 win over junior Kamila Stasiowska (Burlington, Conn.) at number five. Kamal and Wong split their two sets at number six before the team decision was clinched, Wong taking the opening set 6-3, and Kamal winning the second set by the same score.
