Softball Wraps Up the Regular Season with Road Sweep of WPI

WORCESTER, Mass.—Graduate student Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) struck out 10 in game one and sophomore Ruby Madia (Princeton Junction, N.J.) hit a go-ahead three-runner homer in the top of the seventh in the nightcap to help visiting Babson College sweep WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader on Thursday evening at Rooftop Field.

The Beavers defeated the Engineers 3-2 in the opener and completed the sweep with an 8-6 victory in game two. Babson has won three straight games to close the regular season at 24-13 overall and 14-6 in conference play. WPI has dropped its last three outings to slip to 22-14 overall and 11-7 in the NEWMAC.

Game 1: Babson 3, WPI 2
Junior Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Madia, senior Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) and first-year Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) all finished with two hits for the Beavers. O'Reilly went the distance in the circle allowing two runs, both unearned, on just three hits to improve to 9-5 on the year with the win.

Sophomore Naomi Boldebuck (Billerica, Mass.) allowed three runs, two of them earned, on 10 hits to go along with five strikeouts over 7.0 innings and dropped to 14-4 on the year for the Engineers.

Scoreless through three, Babson loaded the bases with one out and Pak and DiCampello both scored when Madia's sharp single to right was misplayed to grab a 2-0 lead. The Beavers tacked on another run in the fifth as Moore singled to center and stole second before coming around on Pak's two-out base hit to left.

O'Reilly retired seven in a row following a two-out error in the third before junior Meg Sherwood (Norfolk, Mass.) started the bottom of the sixth with a single. She moved to second on a dropped fly ball and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Riley O'Brien (Wynantskill, N.Y.) to get WPI on the board. The Green and White stranded a pair of runners in the top of the seventh and the Engineers got the potential tying run to second with one out following an error and a single, but O'Reilly got a pop up to first and strikeout to end the threat.

Game 2: Babson 8, WPI 6
Moore was 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and two runs scored, sophomore Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, and Pak and senior Athena Hadjipanayis (Rye, N.Y.) added two hits apiece for the Beavers. Graduate student Cameron Whiteford (Centerville, Md.) went the distance in the circle, striking out three and walking five to improve to 11-6 with the complete-game victory.

O'Brien and junior Emma Nagy (Monroe, Wash.) both went 2-for-4 with an extra-base hit and an RBI as five different players knocked in a run for the Engineers. Graduate student Sofia Knopf (Plymouth, Mass.) fell to 5-7 on the year with the loss after giving up all eight runs in 6.2 innings.

The Green and White took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to an RBI double by Walsh and an RBI ground out by DiCampello before WPI pulled even after taking advantage of an error and an RBI double by Sherwood in the bottom of the second. Walsh brought home Moore with an RBI knock and later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Devin McCall (Virginia Beach, Va.) to help the Beavers regain a 4-2 edge in the top of the third.

O'Brien cut the Engineers' deficit to 4-3 with a solo homer and Nagy came through with a two-out RBI double to tie in the bottom of the frame. The hosts then took their first lead of the day on an RBI double by junior Destiny Lum (Kahalu'u, Hawaii) to make it 5-4 in the last of the fifth.

Hadjipanayis tied things up with a two-out base hit that knocked in first-year Maddy DeLong (Cranford, N.J.) in the sixth before Madia delivered the knockout blow with a three-run homer to left with one out in the seventh for an 8-5 lead. The Engineers brought the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh but Whiteford fanned Nagy to secure the victory.

Babson will open NEWMAC Tournament play next Wednesday, while WPI concludes the regular season at Wheaton on Friday beginning at 3 p.m.
