Five-Run Eighth Inning Sends No. 29 Baseball Past Suffolk, 9-4

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) homered on the first pitch of the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie and No. 29 Babson College tacked on four more runs in the frame on the way to defeating visiting Suffolk University, 9-4, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field.

With the win, Babson improves to 14-6 overall. Suffolk has dropped its last five games to slip to 7-16 on the year.

Graduate student Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with three RBI and junior Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) doubled and knocked in three runs to pace the Beavers. Liss and junior Owen Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.) each had a hit and scored a pair of runs, graduate student Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) singled twice and classmate Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) doubled, walked and added two runs scored in the win.

Sophomore Colin Flynn (Dorchester, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and senior Max Iorio (Hull, Mass.) was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the Rams.

The Green and White took advantage of two walks and an error to take a 2-0 lead on Julian's two-out, two-run single through the left side in the second. Suffolk answered right back in the top of the third though, getting a sacrifice fly from Flynn and a two-out, two-out base hit to center from Iorio that brought home graduate student Chris Cimino (Scarborough, Maine) and sophomore Noah Greco (North Haven, Conn.) to go in front 3-2.

Liss scored on an error with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game and Teator plated Santos with a sacrifice to help the Beavers regain a 4-3 edge in the fifth. Greco scored on a passed ball to tie the game in the top of the seventh, but the Rams left the bases loaded after senior Matt Milone (Amston, Conn.) induced a ground out to first to escape the jam.

Senior Luke McClintock (South Hamilton, Mass.) worked around a lead-off single in the top of the eighth and Liss sparked a five-run rally in the bottom of the frame with his solo shot to right. Julian legged out a two-out infield single that brought home Stephens, Teator brought home two more runs with a double to left center to make it 8-4 and later scored on a wild pitch for a five-run advantage.

McClintock, who was one of seven Babson pitchers to see action, earned the win to improve to 1-0 on the season. Sophomore John McDevitt (Auburn, N.H.) shouldered the loss to slip to 0-2 on the year for the Rams.

Babson returns to action on Saturday when it hosts No. 13/14 Salve Regina in a twin bill starting at 12 p.m., while Suffolk travels to UMass Boston on Thursday at 3 p.m.
