Softball Settles for Road Split at Clark

WORCESTER, Mass.—Senior Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) and first-year Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) both went 3-for-4 and were two of six players to record multiple hits in game two as Babson College earned a split of Wednesday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader at Clark University.

The Beavers won game two 11-1 in five innings after suffering a 5-4 loss to the Cougars in the opener. Babson is now 22-13 overall and 12-6 in conference play, while Clark drops to 15-21 overall and 5-13 in the NEWMAC.

Game 2: Babson 11, Clark 1 (5 inn.)
Moore doubled and scored three times, DiCampello drove in two runs and sophomore Devin McCall (Virginia Beach, Va.) went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in to lead the Beavers' 15-hit attack. Sophomore Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, senior Athena Hadjipanayis (Rye, N.Y.) singled twice and scored a pair of runs, and junior Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y.) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the rout.

Graduate student Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) struck out three and allowed one run over 5.0 innings in the circle to improve to 8-5 on the year for the Green and White.

Babson scored two runs in each of the first two frames, three with two outs, to build a 4-0 lead. DiCampello beat out an infield single to bring home Moore and McCall followed with an RBI knock to right in the first, while Moore and Walsh produced RBI singles in the second.

Clark got on the board thanks to an RBI double by graduate student Rebecca Mauro (Easton, Conn.) with one out in the third, but the Beavers responded with a five-run fourth inning to pull away. Hadjipanayis and first-year Maddy DeLong (Crranford, N.J.) both scored on an error, DiCampello made it 7-1 with an RBI single to center and McCall capped the uprising with a two-out, two-run base hit to right extending the cushion to 9-1.

Babson added two more runs in the top of the fifth as Moore scored on an error and Pak followed with an RBI single for a 10-run margin.

Sophomore Megan Dube (Leominster, Mass.) went the distance in the circle for the Cougars, who finished with three errors leading to seven unearned runs, and dropped to 7-11 with the loss.

Game 1: Clark 5, Babson 4
Pak was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI and Moore singled twice, stole three bases and knocked in a run for Babson. Graduate student Cameron Whiteford (Centerville, Md.) shouldered the loss and is now 10-6 on the year after giving up two earned runs on five hits while striking out five and walking five in a complete-game effort.

Mauro went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, while first-year Avery Dillon (Bethany, Conn.) and sophomore Charlise Quigley (Long Beach, N.Y.) both singled and scored for Clark. Junior Brooke Buzzeo (Trumbull, Conn.) gave up three earned runs on seven hits while striking out six in a complete game to improve to 7-9 with the victory in the circle.

The Green and White took a 1-0 lead on Moore's two-out RBI single in the third and extended the margin to 3-0 in the sixth as Pak ripped a triple down the right field line to score Walsh before coming home on DiCampello's double to left one batter later.

Clark took advantage of a pair of Babson errors to cut its deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth and erased a two-run deficit with one swing in the bottom of the seventh. Quigley reached on an error, Dillon walked and Mauro followed with a three-run blast to right center to give the Cougars the walk-off win.

Both teams conclude the regular season on Thursday as Babson travels to WPI for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m., while Clark travels to MIT for a 3 p.m. twin bill.
