Softball Comes Up Short at Endicott, 4-1

BEVERLY, Mass.—Sophomore Abby McClaflin (Easthampton, Mass.) and senior Dani Lear (Groveland, Mass.) hit home runs and sophomore Kristen Beebe (Brentwood, N.H.) tossed six shutout innings as Endicott College defeated Babson College, 4-1, in a non-conference softball game Tuesday afternoon at the Endicott Softball Complex.

With the loss, the Beavers had a three-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 21-12 overall while Endicott won its second straight game to improve to 19-12 on the season.

Senior Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) had three hits and two stolen bases for the Beavers, who had five others produce one hit each. First-year Kay LaLiberty (Lowell, Mass.) singled and scored, and sophomore Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) knocked in the only run. Sophomore Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) suffered the loss (4-2) after giving up just two earned runs and no walks in six innings, striking out three.

McClaflin and Lear each had two hits and an RBI for the Gulls, who managed just six hits off Vlacich. Beebe (8-2) fanned 10 batters and was charged with one run before junior Analise Grady (Reading, Mass.) came on to get the final three outs in the seventh inning for her third save.

The Gulls took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when McClaflin belted a home run to left field, her team-leading fourth of the season. The lead doubled in the last of the third when Lear clubbed a leadoff home to left center, her first of the season.

Moore was stranded at third in the second inning after a two-out single followed by a stolen base and a passed ball, and the Beavers left two runners on in the fourth after an Endicott error and a hit batter. Moore singled and stole second again in the fifth but Beebe got a ground out to end the threat.

The Gulls added a pair of unearned insurance runs in the bottom fifth as Lear and junior Ella Tower (Windham, N.H.) led off with singles to left, a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Mia Mitchell (Medford, Mass.) advanced the runners, and they both raced home on a Babson infield error.

The Beavers threatened in the sixth inning, loading the bases with one out on singles by junior Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y.), sophomore pinch hitter Devin McCall (Virginia Beach, Va.) and classmate Ruby Madia (Princeton Junction, N.J.), but Beebe got a strikeout and a pop out to end the threat.

Babson scored its only run in the seventh inning after loading the bases with no outs on singles by LaLiberty, Moore and senior Athena Hadjipanayis (Rye, N.Y.). Grady came on for Endicott and got Walsh on a groundout that scored LaLiberty, and the Gulls turned a 1-3-2 double play to end the game.

Babson is back in action on Wednesday with a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at Clark, beginning at 12 p.m. Endicott resumes a halted game against Suffolk on Thursday, beginning at 4 p.m.
