Offense Carries Baseball to Key NEWMAC Victory over Wheaton, 17-10

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Graduate student Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and six RBI to help Babson College defeat visiting Wheaton College, 17-10, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Govoni Field.

Babson, which has won nine of its last 11 games, improves to 23-10 overall and 8-6 in conference play. Wheaton has dropped two of its last three outings to slip to 18-17 overall and 9-7 in the NEWMAC.

Junior Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) singled twice, drove in four runs and recorded the final six outs to pick up his sixth save of the season, while senior Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) and sophomore Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) both registered three hits and scored four times apiece to lead the Beavers' 15-hit attack. Junior Connor Doan (Pasadena, Texas) worked a third of an inning to earn the win and improve to 3-0 on the year.

Sophomore Casey Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) was 4-for-5 with a double, a homer, three RBI and two runs scored, while seniors Timmy Wagner (Hingham, Mass.) and Kevin Matos (Lawrence, Mass.) both homered and drove in three runs for the Lyons, who had 16 hits in the loss. First-year Declan Lush (Seekonk, Mass.) also hit a pinch-hit home run, the first of his career, in the top of the ninth. Sophomore Aiden Cardoza (Dartmouth, Mass.) was saddled with the loss and dropped to 2-5 after allowing four earned runs on five hits in 1.1 innings.

Down 1-0 after Matos put Wheaton on the board with an RBI double in the top of the first, Teator, Savage and Liss produced three straight RBI singles to give the Green and White a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the frame. Guest ripped a singled down the left field line to bring home graduate students Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) and Thomas Parisi (Somers, N.Y.) to make it 5-1 in the second, and the Beavers tacked on four more runs in the fourth, all with two, to extend their cushion to 9-1.

Liss reached on an error allowing Julian to race home from second, Teator doubled to deep right to plate Savage and Liss, and senior Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) followed with a base hit to left center to cap the rally. Babson junior James Clark (Northborough, Mass.) got two quick outs in the top of the fifth but was unable to finish the frame as Wensley brought home a pair of runs with his triple down the right field line before Matos cranked a two-run homer to right to cut the Lyons' deficit to 9-5.

The Beavers pushed their lead back to 11-5 in the bottom of the fifth as Savage brought home Guest with an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch, only to see Wheaton answer with a four-run sixth. Wensley cut the margin in half with a three-run bomb to right and Wagner followed with a solo blast to make it 11-9.

Senior Luke McClintock (South Hamilton, Mass.) settled in after a shaky sixth inning and retired the side in order in the seventh before Teator brought home Guest with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 12-9. Teator worked around a one-out single in the top of the eighth and the Green and White tacked on five more two-out runs in the bottom of the inning, which included a grand slam by Savage, to rebuild an eight-run advantage.

Babson closes out its regular season with a doubleheader at Springfield on Saturday at 12 p.m., while Wheaton hosts Suffolk on Thursday at 4 p.m.
