Softball Drops Non-Conference Clash at Tufts, 3-2

MEDFORD, Mass.—Sophomore Heaven Oliva (Ventura, Calif.) ripped a two-run double to center field in the fifth inning to spark a three-run rally as Tufts University posted a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Babson College in a non-conference softball game Tuesday afternoon at Spicer Field.

With the loss, the Beavers had a two-game winning streak snapped and slid to 18-10 overall while Tufts won for the sixth time in its last seven outings to improve to 18-13 overall.

Senior Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, sophomore Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) had a pair of hits and scored a run, and first-year Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) produced an RBI single for the Beavers. Graduate student Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) suffered the loss (6-4) after allowing three runs on six hits in 4.2 innings, striking out one.

Junior Kaitlyn Perucci (Coto De Caza, Calif.) went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored for the Jumbos, classmate Haley Leimbach (Wantagh, N.Y.) doubled, walked and scored a run, and senior Keriann Slayton (Mechanicsville, Va.) singled and knocked in the go-ahead run in the fifth. Graduate student Sophia Dicocco (Bozrah, Conn.) went the distance to earn the win (10-6) in the circle, allowing just one earned run on six hits while fanning two.

The Beavers struck early with single runs in the first and second innings. Moore reached on a leadoff single to third in the first inning, stole second, was sacrificed to third and scored on DiCampello's single to right.

After O'Reilly escaped trouble in the bottom of the first when Tufts put runners at second and third with one out, the Beavers doubled their lead with an unearned run in the top of the second. Walsh reached on an infield single, went to second on an infield grounder, and raced home on a wild pitch and a throwing error by the Jumbos. Both teams threatened in the third inning but Moore was stranded after a lead-off double for the Beavers and the Jumbos left runners at first and third in the last half of the inning.

Tufts produced the game-deciding rally in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring three times with two outs. After O'Reilly retired the first two hitters, Perucci singled through the left side and Leimbach walked, and both came around to score on Oliva's double to center. Graduate student Cameron Whiteford (Centerville, Md.) came in for O'Reilly, and Slayton singled up the middle to score a pinch runner for Oliva.

Dicocco retired the Beavers in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win for the hosts.

Babson returns home to host Bates in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, beginning at 3 p.m. at Alumni Field. Tufts plays a single game at Endicott on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
