Whiteford's No-Hitter Helps Softball Earn Split with Bates

Moore Records 200th Career Hit, O'Reilly Carries No-Hitter into 7th Inning of Game 1 for the Beavers

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) became just the third player in program history to surpass 200 career hits and graduate student Cameron Whiteford (Centerville, Md.) tossed her second no-hitter of the year to help Babson College split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Bates College on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Beavers dropped the opener 2-1 in nine innings before rebounding with a 3-0 victory in game two to improve to 19-11 on the year. Bates is now 15-13 overall.

Game 2: Babson 3, Bates 0
Whiteford struck out nine and walked two while allowing just three base runners to improve to 9-5 on the year with the win. Moore went 3-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) added two hits, including her second home run of the season, to lead the Beavers' nine-hit attack.

The Green and White stranded five on base over the first two innings before taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Raymond smoked a two-out line drive over the fence in left. Moore, who recorded her 200th career hit with a second-inning single, tacked on a pair of insurance runs for Babson in the bottom of the sixth with her two-out base hit to center that brought home first-years Maddy DeLong (Cranford, N.J.) and Samantha Skivo (Conshohocken, Pa.).

Whiteford was superb throughout her outing, six consecutive batters to start the game and the final eight to finish off the no-hitter. She registered back-to-back strikeouts to end the fifth, recorded three straight putouts in the sixth and then struck out the side in the seventh.

First-year Haley Alden (Manchester, N.H.) shouldered the loss for the Bobcats to slip to 2-4 on the year after giving up one run on five hits over 3.2 innings.

Game 1: Bates 2, Babson 1 (9 inn.)
Moore and junior Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y.) finished with two hits apiece and graduate student Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) struck out 10 and allowed just two hits over nine innings for the Beavers.  Her counterpart, Bobcats' junior Delaney Rankin (Harrison, Maine), went the distance in the circle allowing one run one four hits to go along with four strikeouts to improve to 10-4 on the year.

O'Reilly (6-5) retired the first seven batters she faced and allowed just a pair of walks before Bates senior Grace Holthouser (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) broke up her no-hit bid with a two-out blooper to shallow left in the top of the seventh. Rankin was equally as good, setting down 11 straight batters after giving a lead-off single to Moore in the bottom of the first.

Babson stranded Pak at third following a lead-off double in the fifth and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh before the Bobcats went in front 1-0 in the top of the eighth sophomore Misora Hashiramoto (Tokyo, Japan) raced home on a sacrifice fly by classmate Maya Lee (Wayland, Mass.). The Beavers tied the game on Moore's RBI single to left in the bottom of the frame, but Bates pushed across the winning run in the ninth as sophomore Zariya Anderson's (Wayzata, Minn.) bunt got past the circle allowing Anderson to score from third for a 2-1 advantage.

Rankin erased the runner at second in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a double play and got a lineout one batter later to end the game.

Babson returns to action on Saturday when it welcomes Salve Regina to Alumni Field for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m., while Bates hosts Bowdoin for a pair of games on Friday beginning at 2:30 p.m.
