No. 14/19 Women’s Lacrosse Overpowers Emerson, 27-6

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Graduate student Ellie Hilsabeck (Hingham, Mass.) scored a season-high five goals and 14 players got into the scoring act as No. 14/19 Babson College overpowered Emerson College, 27-6, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

Babson, ranked 14th by the IWLCA and 19th by USA Lacrosse Magazine, won for the fifth time in six games to improve to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the NEWMAC. Emerson suffered its fifth straight loss to fall to 3-5 overall and 0-4 in league play.

Senior Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.) finished with three goals and three assists, classmate Nora Lema (Duxbury, Mass.) contributed two goals and three assists, and senior Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) and sophomore Mia Fierro (Oswego, N.Y.) added three goals each. Senior Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) had two goals and two assists, classmate Michaela Downer (North Andover, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and two assists, and fellow senior Solana Fahey (North Andover, Mass.) scored twice in the victory. Connolly continued to dominate the draws, finishing with 20 draw controls.

Seniors Grayce Unger (West Newton, Mass.) and Sophie Shuman (Topsfield, Mass.) chipped in with their first career goals for the Beavers.

First-year Laina Gustafson (Cross Plains, Wis.) led the Lions with two goals and an assist and senior Callie Krosin (Pikesville, Md.) tallied one goal and one assist. Gustafson added three draw controls, a caused turnover and a ground ball and first-year Adele Eaton (King of Prussia, Pa.) contributed two draw controls, a caused turnover and a ground ball in the loss.

After Blake scored for Babson just 31 seconds after the opening draw, Gustafson answered for Emerson three minutes later. The Beavers then went on a tear, scoring nine straight goals over the next five minutes, with three goals by Hilsabeck and one each by Fahey, Evans, Connolly, Shuman and Blake. Sophomore Ava Dellicompagni (Coatesville, Pa.) stopped the bleeding for Emerson before Connolly fired in her second goal to put Babson up 11-2 after one frame.

The second quarter was all Babson, scatting seven goals throughout the 15 minutes to take a commanding lead. Hilsabeck scored twice in the rally, and Unger, senior Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.), Downer, Blake and Fahey added one apiece and the Green and White went into the break up 18-2.

Emerson showed some life with two of the first three goals to start the third quarter, but Babson ran off four straight goals by Lema, Fierro, Connolly and first-year Estelle Gromko (Ipswich, Mass.) extending the lead to 23-4. The Green and White closed out the win with the final four goals over the last 10 minutes.

Senior Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) made three saves in goal in the first half, sophomore Morgan McGahan (Ho Ho Kus, N.J.) made one stop in the third quarter, and classmate Valentina Erigoyen (Miami, Fla.) finished out the final 15 minutes between the pipes for the Beavers.

Babson returns to action on Wednesday at Clark with a 7 p.m. contest in Worcester. Emerson returns home to host UMass Boston on Monday  at 6 p.m.
