WORCESTER, Mass.—Seniors
Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.),
Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.) and
Michaela Downer (North Andover, Mass.) combined for eight goals and seven assists, and 11 players scored at least one goal as No. 14/16 Babson College rolled past Clark University, 20-4, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening at Granger Field.
Babson, ranked 14th by the IWLCA and 16th by USA Lacrosse Magazine, won for the sixth time in seven games to improve to 6-2 overall and 5-0 in the NEWMAC. Clark dropped its third in a row and fell to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in league play.
Novitch (3g, 3a), Blake (3g, 2a) and Downer (2g, 2a) were supported on offense by two goals and an assist from graduate student
Ellie Hilsabeck (Hingham, Mass.) and junior
Lilly Bedard (Jupiter, Fla.) and a pair of goals by senior
Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) and sophomore
Jen Austin (Farmington, Conn.). Connolly collected 18 draw controls, fellow senior
Solana Fahey (North Andover, Mass.) registered a team-high three caused turnovers, and sophomore
Mia Fierro (Oswego, N.Y.) scooped up a team-high three ground balls in the win.
Senior Meghan Fogarty (Melrose, Mass) scored three of the four goals for the Cougars. Junior Alexandra Cacciapaglia (Ridgefield, Conn.) caused a pair of turnovers, and senior Annie Battle (Bozeman, Mont.) picked up three ground balls and made 11 saves in goal in the setback.
The Beavers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first four minutes on two goals from Novitch and one each from Blake and Fahey. Hilsabeck and Connolly added goals before Clark got on the board with a goal by sophomore Sarah Forrester (Acton, Mass.) with 1:57 to go in the quarter. Novitch answered that with her third of the game 19 seconds later as the Beavers took a 7-1 lead into the second quarter.
The second frame was all Beavers as they outscored the hosts 7-0 to go up 14-0 by halftime. Downer and Hilsabeck scored in the first 66 seconds of the quarter, Blake and senior
Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) found the net 10 seconds apart midway through the period, and Downer, Connolly and Blake rounded out the scoring in the first half for the Beavers.
Bedard opened the scoring for Babson in the third quarter before Fogarty scored her first goal for Clark with five minutes to go in the frame. Austin scored on a pair of free-position goals as the Beavers' lead swelled to 17-2 after three, and Bedard, seniors
Cameron Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) and
Nora Lema (Duxbury, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Green and White in the victory.
Babson is back on the field at Salve Regina on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Newport, R.I., while Clark travels to Smith on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. opening draw.
GAME NOTES
• Babson is 5-0 all-time against Clark in a series that dates back to 2021 with all five games being decided by at least 15 goals.
• The Beavers have outscored their five conference opponents 106-26 this spring.
• The Green and White reached the 20-goal plateau for the third straight game and the 10th time since the beginning of last season.
• Connolly upped her career total of draw controls to 619, which ranks third all-time in Division III. She needs just 18 more to reach the record of 637 set by Emily Wadds of Wittenberg from 2016-19.
