No. 14/19 Women’s Lacrosse Too Strong for Mount Holyoke, 24-2

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.— Senior Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.) registered two goals and three assists in the first quarter as No. 14/19 Babson College jumped out to an 8-0 lead, and the Beavers went on to a decisive 24-2 victory over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening at the Mount Holyoke Turf and Track Complex.

Babson, ranked 14th by the IWLCA and 19th by USA Lacrosse Magazine, has won four of its last five games to improve to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the NEWMAC. Mount Holyoke had dropped four of its last five to fall to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Novitch, fellow senior Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.), junior Lilly Bedard (Jupiter, Fla.) and sophomore Mia Fierro (Oswego, N.Y.) all scored three goals in a balanced attack for the Beavers. Graduate student Ellie Hilsabeck (Hingham, Mass.), seniors Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.) and Michaela Downer (North Andover, Mass.) and junior Tatum Sands (East Dorset, Vt.) scored twice each and senior Nora Lema (Duxbury, Mass.) chipped in with a goal, two assists, two caused turnovers and two ground balls in the win.

Senior Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) dominated the draws with 21 draw controls for the Green and White and senior Cameron Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) had two caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Junior Elle Mader (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored both goals for the Lyons and senior Ella Phillips (Sandwich, Mass.) recorded an assist. First-year Josie McFadden (Edmonton, Alb.) registered two caused turnovers and three ground balls, classmate Juliana Spaulding (Wakefield, Mass.) added two caused turnovers and two ground balls, and first-year Valeria Bolanis (Newington, Conn.) made eight saves in goal in the loss.

Downer and Blake fired in goals in the first five minutes of the game to stake the Beavers to an early lead. Evans and Novitch scored a minute apart later in the first to double the lead, Hilsabeck scored twice 28 seconds apart, and Novitch and Blake tacked on goals in the final 30 seconds of the quarter to make it 8-0 after one.

Evans opened the scoring in the second frame, Lema potted her first goal of the season to give the Beavers a double-digit lead, and Evans, Downer and Novitch found the back of the net as Babson extended its lead to 14-0 by halftime.

Sophomore Jen Austin (Farmington, Conn.) got into the act to open the third quarter with her first goal of the season and Ferro added her second of the year a minute later. Bedard and Sands sandwiched back-to-back goals around the first career goal by sophomore Mia Shuman (Topsfield, Mass.) as the lead ballooned to 21-0 after three quarter, and the Beavers coasted to victory in the fourth quarter.

Babson returns home to host Emerson in a conference game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at MacDowell Field. Mount Holyoke plays again on Saturday at Wheaton at 1 p.m.
