Softball Rallies Past New Paltz, Falls to No. 4 Rowan on Wednesday at The Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla.— Sophomore Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI and sparked a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings before Babson College defeated SUNY New Paltz, 7-6 in eight innings, Wednesday at The Spring Games in Florida.

The second game of the day was a different story as the Beavers fell to unbeaten and fourth-ranked Rowan University, 9-1, in five innings.

The Beavers end the day with a 5-3 record on the season while New Paltz is now 3-9 and Rowan remains perfect at 18-0 overall.

Game 1 – Babson 7, New Paltz 6 (8 innings)

Senior Athena Hadjipanayis (Rye, N.Y.) had two hits for the Beavers, junior Allie Cubberly (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) reached base twice and knocked in a pair, and first-year Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) and junior Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y.) each drove in a run. Sophomore Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) earned the win in relief, working four innings and allowing one run on four hits while striking out three.

Junior Kelsey O'Brien (Monroe, N.Y.) produced three hits, including a triple, and knocked in two for the Hawks while senior Sophia D'Arcangelis (Liverpool, N.Y.) also had three hits, and sophomore Ella Sharrock (Selden, N.Y.) had two hits and drove in three. Junior Alyssa Zangrilli (Carmel, N.Y.) suffered the loss, giving up just one walk and an unearned run in an inning and a third of relief.

Down 6-3 in the seventh, Babson loaded the bases with no outs as Raymond sandwiched a double to left center between walks to sophomore Devin McCall (Virginia Beach, Va.) and first-year Maddy DeLong (Cranford, N.J.). Cubberly drew a walk to bring in McCall, and DeLong and Raymond raced home on Pak's fielder's choice to second base.

Senior Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.), who started the eighth inning on second base, went to third on Hadjipanayis' sacrifice bunt and scored the game-winner on DiCampello's infield grounder.

The Green and White was forced to come from behind after New Paltz scored one run in the first inning and two in the third. O'Brien tripled to right center in the first and scored on Sharrock's single, and Sharrock belted a two-run home run to right center in the third. Babson tied the game with a 3-spot in the last of the third as Raymond delivered a bases-loaded two-run single to center and Cubberly hit a sacrifice fly to center.

New Paltz regained the lead with two runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth. O'Brien hit a clutch two-out, two-run single in the fourth, and first-year Mallory Rohon (Southington, Conn.) hit an RBI single to center for an unearned run in the fifth.

Game 2 – Rowan 9, Babson 1 (5 innings)

DiCampello had a single and an RBI in game two as the Green and White managed just five hits off senior Rylee Lutz (Mantua, N.J.). Graduate student Cameron Whiteford (Centerville, Md.) took the loss (3-1) after getting tagged for eight earned runs in four innings while striking out seven. Lutz allowed just one earned run and struck out six while not walking a batter to earn the win (8-0) for the Profs.

Seniors Liz McCaffery (Cranford, N.J.) and McKenzie Melvin (Williamstown, N.J.) and fifth-year Payton MacNair (Cinnaminson, N.J.) all had two hits, including one for extra bases, and drove in two runs for the Profs, who finished with 13 hits.

The Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when sophomore Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) and Hadjipanayis reached on infield hits and DiCampello hit an RBI single down the right field line. The Profs responded by batting around in the bottom of the inning as sophomore Zara MacNair (Cinnaminson, N.J.) and McCaffery hit back-to-back RBI doubles, Melvin followed with an RBI triple, and Payton MacNair capped the rally with another run-scoring two-bagger.

Rowan tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning on RBI singles by sophomore Holly Markus (Phillipsburg, N.J.), Melvin, and Payton MacNair. Sophomore Aly Reim (Delran, N.J.) and McCaffery added RBI hits in the fifth inning to close out the game.

Babson will be back on the diamond with another pair of games on Thursday, taking on Farmingdale State at 9 a.m. and Wisconsin-La Crosse at 11:30 a.m.
