CLERMONT, Fla.—The Babson College softball team wrapped up the first half of its spring break trip by splitting a pair of games on Monday. The Beavers defeated St. Lawrence University, 4-1, in their opener before dropping a 6-1 decision to unbeaten Wesleyan University in game two.
Babson, which had won three straight games before falling to the Cardinals, are now 4-2 on the year. St. Lawrence is 2-1 while Wesleyan improves to 10-0 overall.
Babson 4, St. Lawrence 1
Sophomore
Ruby Madia (Princeton Junction, N.J.) smacked a two-run homer and graduate student
Cameron Whiteford (Centerville, Md.) struck out 11 in a complete-game two-hitter to improve to 3-0 on the year. Sophomore
Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) doubled and scored and senior
Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) reached base twice with a single and a walk in the victory.
Sophomore Allison Kloft (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) recorded an RBI double and first-year Marleigh Monroe (Southwick, Mass.) went the distance in the circle for the Saints allowing just one earned run on six hits.
Scoreless through three innings, the Green and White went in front with a three-run fourth. First-year
Maddy DeLong (Cranford, N.J.) reached on a leadoff error and later scored the game's first run on a throw down to first following a strikeout before Madia hit her first career homer, a two-run shot to left, with two outs in the frame to make it 3-0.
Walsh led off the fourth by legging out a double and scored one batter later thanks to a St. Lawrence defensive miscue following Moore's bunt single for a 4-0 advantage. Whiteford retired seven in a row after issuing a walk to start the game and set down eight consecutive hitters before sophomore Caelen Jahnle (Ashburnham, Mass.) reached on an error to start the bottom of the sixth. She would later come home on Kloft's two-out double to center for the Saints only run.
Wesleyan 6, Babson 1
Moore and junior
Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y.) both recorded two hits and classmate
Allie Cubberly (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) reached base twice and produced an RBI double for the Beavers. Graduate student
Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) dropped to 0-2 with the loss after giving up four runs on five hits in 3.0 innings, while sophomore
Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) struck out six and gave up two runs on three hits in four innings of relief.
Senior Isabella Secaira-Cotto (Valley Stream, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 with a homer and two runs batted in and junior Cat Palmer (Cheshire, Conn.) singled and knocked in a pair of runs for the Cardinals. First-year Jacelyn Lees (Watauga, Texas) singled twice and improved to 5-0 in the circle with a complete-game effort that included six strikeouts.
Wesleyan's first five hitters reached base in the top of the first, which included a two-run single by Palmer to center, before O'Reilly recorded three straight strikeouts to escape further damage by leaving the bases loaded. The Cardinals doubled their lead in the second though as Secaira-Cotto launched a two-out, two-run homer to left center to make it 4-0.
Babson stranded a pair of runners in the second before breaking through in the fourth as Pak drew a two-out walk and raced home when Cubberly ripped a double down the left field line cutting the deficit to 4-1. The Green and White got singles from first-year
Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) and Pak to bring the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the sixth, but Lees induced an infield pop out and the Cardinals tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh for the final margin.
Following an off day on Wednesday, Babson will take on New Paltz at 9 a.m. and No. 3 Rowan at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday in Clermont, Fla.
