Softball Edges UNE, Blanks Wisconsin-River Falls to Complete Sunday Sweep

CLERMONT, Fla.—Four different players drove in a pair of runs and three pitchers combined for 25 strikeouts as Babson College defeated the University of New England and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Sunday at Legends Way Park.

The Beavers (3-1) defeated the University of New England 5-4 in their opener before breezing to an 8-0 victory in five innings over the Falcons in the second game of the day.

Babson 5, University of New England 4
Senior Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) and sophomore Ruby Madia (Princeton Junction, N.J.) both had a pair of hits and drove in two runs apiece, while graduate student Cameron Whiteford (Centerville, Md.) doubled and walked twice for the Green and White. Sophomore Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) recorded a career-high nine strikeouts and earned her first win of the year after giving up two earned runs over 4.0 innings before handing the ball to graduate student Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) who fanned eight over 3.0 innings to pick up the save.

Sophomore Emma Michaud (Winslow, Maine) was 2-of-4 with a run scored and classmate Hannah Irons (Plainfield, Conn.) hit a two-run homer for the Nor'easters. Junior Kara MacDonald (Medford, Mass.) settled for a no-decision after giving up two runs over the first three frames, while sophomore Mo Kinsella (Chicago, Ill.) took the loss in relief after allowing three runs over the final three innings.

Down 2-0 after Irons' two-run shot to left in the top of the third, Babson pulled even in the bottom of the frame when Madia singled up the middle with two outs to bring home Moore and senior Athena Hadjipanayis (Rye, N.Y.). The Nor'easters took advantage of a walk, an error and a wild pitch to go back in front 3-2 in the fourth only to see the Beavers responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Moore put the Green and White in front for good with a two-run triple to the base of the wall in center and then scored on first-year Maddy DeLong's (Cranford, N.J.) line out to left for a 5-3 advantage. UNE (0-1) got within a run on first-year Marissa Durette's (Plymouth, Mass.) pinch-hit RBI double with two outs in the top of the seventh, but O'Reilly closed the door on the comeback bid by punching out first-year Lizzia Brytowski (Hopedale, Mass.) to end the game.

Babson 8, Wisconsin-River Falls 0 (5 inn.)
First-year Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) doubled twice and drove in two runs, DeLong went 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBI and junior Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y.) tripled as part of a two-hit game and knocked in a run to pace the Beavers' attack. Sophomore Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) singled, scored twice and added an RBI, while Whiteford tossed a four-hit shutout and recorded eight strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the year in the circle.

Senior Kelly Aultman (Plainfield, Ill.) went 2-for-2 with a double for Wisconsin-River Falls (5-4).

Moore started the game by reaching on an error, stole third and later scored on a wild pitch for an early 1-0 lead. DiCampello doubled to bring home sophomore Devin McCall (Virginia Beach, Va.) to make it 2-0 in the second and the Beavers tacked on three more runs with two outs to bust the game open.

Walsh plated DiCampello with an RBI single to center and Hadjipanayis singled to center with the bases loaded to drive in Walsh and Moore for a 5-0 lead. DeLong came through with a two-run triple in the top of the fourth and the Green and White struck again with two outs in the fifth as DiCampello doubled to the gap in left center before scoring on Pak's RBI triple to right center for an 8-0 advantage.

Whiteford, who tossed a five-inning no-hitter in her Babson debut on Saturday, retired six consecutive batters in the second and third innings and recorded four strikeouts over the final two frames.

The Beavers return to action on Monday when they face St. Lawrence at 9 a.m. and Wesleyan at 11:15 a.m. at the Hancock Field Complex in Clermont, Fla.
