Pride Snaps Beavers' 17-Game Conference Winning Streak

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.) finished with three points apiece and Springfield College closed the second quarter with a four-goal run on the way to defeating No. 20 USILA/No. 15 USA Lacrosse Magazine Babson College, 9-6, in New England Women's and Men's Athletics Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

Babson, which had its 17-game conference winning streak snapped, is now 4-2 overall and 0-1 in league play. Springfield improves to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the NEWMAC with the victory.

Sophomore Camden Matthews (Westford, Mass.) led all players with three goals, while junior Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.), classmate Luke D'Orsi (Jamestown, R.I.) and sophomore Seamus Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.) each scored once for the Beavers. Graduate student Sammy Kalishman (Clarksville, Md.) tied for game-high honors with five ground balls, junior Will Reading (Southlake, Texas) won 7-of-15 face-offs and senior Alex Fascilla (Huntington, N.Y.) made 10 saves in the loss.

Tierney finished with two goals and one assist, Rory Scanlon (Maple Grove, Minn.) scored twice and Burgmyer added a goal and two helpers for the Pride. Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) won 11-of-18 face-offs and scooped up five ground balls, while Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) stopped 10 shots between the pipes.

Down 1-0 just 44 seconds into the contest, Matthews scored to tie the game, D'Orsi converted a feed from graduate student Topher Bower (Chicago, Ill.) for a man-up goal and Rooney tallied following an extended possession to give the Green and White a 3-1 lead with 7:13 left in the first. Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Tierney answered with goals over the final 3:20 of the opening stanza and Springfield took its first lead on Gavin Carzello's (Westfield, Mass.) marker 17 seconds into the second quarter.

Bower set up Smith's man-up tally to tie things up at the 9:59 mark but Scanlon answered back 58 seconds later to key the Pride's four-goal run. Quirk made a pair saves before Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.) and Brady Soldo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored just 57 seconds apart to make it 7-4 with 4:27 to go until halftime, and Scanlon put away a feed from Tierney for a man-up goal to give the hosts an 8-4 edge at the break.

Matthews scored twice around a goal by Tierney to bring the Beavers within 9-6 with 8:38 to go in the third quarter. Quirk made two saves over the final 22 minutes of the contest and seven of Babson's final 10 possessions ended with a turnover as it was held off the scoreboard over the final 23-plus minutes of action.

The Beavers finished with a 33-27 edge in shots and a 24-18 advantage in ground balls while both teams converted a pair of extra-man opportunities.
