No. 13/19 Women’s Lacrosse Sails Past Coast Guard in NEWMAC Opener, 18-3

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Seniors Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.) and Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.) tallied five points each and 10 players scored at least one goal as No. 13/19 Babson College sailed past the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 18-3, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse opener on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

Babson, ranked 13th by the IWLCA and 19th by USA Lacrosse Magazine, posted its first win of the season to improve to 1-1 overall (1-0 NEWMAC). Coast Guard lost its second straight to level off at 2-2 overall (0-1 NEWMAC).

Blake finished with a game-high five goals and Novitch accounted for two goals and a game-high three assists for the Beavers. Classmate Michaela Downer (North Andover, Mass.) chipped in with three goals, graduate student Ellie Hilsabeck (Hingham, Mass.) was good for two goals and an assist, and senior Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) added a goal and an assist in the victory.

Senior Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) dominated the draws with 10 draw controls for the Green and White, graduate student Eileen Manning (Needham, Mass.) caused three turnovers and scooped up two ground balls, and senior Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) made four saves on five shots on goal in roughly 40 minutes in goal to secure the win.

Seniors Laine Weber (Granite Bay, Calif.) and Caitlyn Coates (Hanover, Pa.) and first-year Rileigh Leary (Holden, Mass.) each scored once for the Bears. First-year Ella Campbell (Foxborough, Mass.) collected six draw controls, Campbell and classmate Riley Demory (Arlington, Va.) caused a pair of turnovers each, and juniors Rowan Walsh (Hampstead, Md.) and Gabriella Kraus-Rivera (West Linn, Ore.) scooped up three ground balls apiece. Senior Maici Mintchwarner (Cream Ridge, N.J.) made 11 saves in goal in the setback.

Babson took control early and ran away to a 10-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Blake put the Beavers on the board with her first goal of the day less than two minutes in, and Downer and senior Solana Fahey (North Andover, Mass.) notched goals a minute apart to stretch the lead to 3-0. A six-goal explosion in a span of three-and-a-half minutes, including two by Blake and one each from Novitch, Evans, Connolly, and Hilsabeck, made it 9-0 with just under five minutes to go in the quarter. Novitch added her second of the frame to extend the lead to double digits heading into the second quarter.

Downer made it 11-0 with her second of the game to open the second quarter, but the teams went scoreless for the next eight minutes until Weber got one past Murphy to put the Bears on the board with 3:41 on the clock. Blake and Downer answered for the Beavers, who enjoyed a 13-1 lead at the intermission.

The Beavers scored all four goals of the third quarter, one each by senior Cameron Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio), Hilsabeck, Blake and first-year Estelle Gromko (Ipswich, Mass.), as the lead ballooned to 17-1. Junior Maria Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.) finished off the Babson scoring early in the fourth and Coates and Leary tacked on a pair of late goals for the visitors.

The hosts finished with a 35-12 advantage in shots and won the ground ball battle, 18-10.

Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Roger Williams at 4 p.m., while Coast Guard visits Bridgewater State at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
