Second-Half Run Helps Men's Hoops Put Away MIT, 82-70

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Nate Amado (Hanson, Mass.) scored a game-high 23 points to help Babson College defeat visiting MIT, 82-70, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Wednesday night inside Staake Gymnasium.

Babson, which snapped a two-game skid, improves to 13-8 overall and 7-5 in conference play. MIT has dropped six of its last seven games to slip to 9-12 overall and 3-9 in the NEWMAC.

Amado finished 9-of-15 from the floor and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, while graduate student Felix Kloman (Ipswich, Mass.) added 22 points to lead the Beavers. Fellow grad student Alex Stoddard (Wellesley, Mass.) scored 16 points and matched his career high with five steals in the victory.

Sophomore Isaac Dobie (Kitty Hawk, N.C.) scored 14 points and went 10-of-11 at the free throw line but fouled out just 29 seconds into the second for the Engineers. Junior Parker Spann (Omaha, Neb.) finished with 13 points and six rebounds, senior Spencer Lin (Menlo Park, Calif.) contributed 12 points and six boards, and sophomore Merlin Gogolin (New York, N.Y.) chipped in with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

Leading by one at the break, MIT made its first five shots to start the second half and matched its largest lead of the game at 53-49 on a jumper by Lin with 14:34 to go before the Green answered with a 25-7 run to seize control of the game. Amado scored seven consecutive points to give the hosts a 58-55 advantage and Stoddard followed with nine of the next 13 points thanks to a trio of three-pointers as the lead swelled to 71-60 on a pair of free throws by Amado with 7:19 to play.

Kloman canned a triple from the left corner on the following possession and another from the top of the key after an offensive rebound by junior Tyler Lauder (Malvern, Pa.) to give Babson its largest lead of the game at 77-62 with 4:34 remaining.

The Engineers took a 41-40 lead into the locker room following a first half that featured a combined 28 fouls and 35 free throws. The Green and White took its biggest lead of the period at 12-6 on a three-pointer by first-year Timmy Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) at the 16-minute mark, but MIT went 20-of-25 at the charity stripe and led by as many as four at 36-32 after two free throws by Dobie with 4:24 remaining in the period.

The Beavers shot 49.2 percent from the floor and finished with 13 steals while turning 19 MIT turnovers into 33 points. The Engineers shot 55.8 percent on the night but were just 2-of-8 from long distance and attempted just one free throw over the final 20 minutes.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday as Babson travels to Springfield at 12:30 p.m., while MIT visits Coast Guard for a 1 p.m. start.
