Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Hoops Outlasts MIT in Overtime, 84-79

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Katelyn Mollica (Foxborough, Mass.) scored 19 points and classmate Emily Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) added six of her 17 in overtime to help Babson College outlast visiting MIT, 84-79, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action inside Staake Gymnasium.

With its fourth consecutive victory, Babson improves to 13-9 overall and 5-3 in conference play. MIT, which lost for just the sixth time in its last eight outings, drops to 10-12 overall and 6-2 in the NEWMAC.

Senior Camilla Silk (Medfield, Mass.) scored 12 points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals, while sophomore Samantha Reale (North Attleboro, Mass.) added 12 points, six boards and two assists for the Beavers. Mollica led all players with three steals and senior Kiara Simone Davis (Coral Springs, Fla.) dished out a game-high six assists and matched her career high with eight boards in the win.

Senior Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) scored 25 points on 12-of-16 shooting and classmate Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) added 19 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals to pace the Engineers.

The Green and White used an 8-0 run that included a layup by Reale, a three-pointer by Flynn and an old-fashioned three-point play by Silk to build a 19-9 lead with 2:52 to go in the first quarter. MIT cut its deficit to 20-19 less than 90 seconds into the second but a pair of free throws by Silk, a driving layup by first-year Julia St. Laurent (Greenland, N.H.) and a trio of three-pointers from Mollica pushed the Beavers' advantage back to 33-23 with 3:55 to go until halftime.

A top of the key trifecta by junior Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.) extended the margin to 38-26 with 2:13 to go in the second and Babson matched its largest lead of the game at 44-32 on two free throws by Reale 61 seconds into the third period. The Engineers outscored the hosts 10-2 over the next eight minutes to get within four on a foul-line jumper by junior Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) with 3:04 to go in the frame and trimmed their deficit to 51-48 on a three-pointer by senior Sarah Berman (York, Pa.) 90 seconds into the fourth quarter.

The Green and White was up by as many as seven twice in the final quarter, the last coming at 57-50 after a layup by Flynn with 5:55 to go, and remained in front 63-57 with 3:05 left after a bucket by St. Laurent. Nwogu scored four straight points as MIT clawed back within 65-64 with 50 seconds remaining and answered two free throws by Reale with another hoop to keep it a one-point game with 16 ticks to go. Perreault went 2-of-2 at the charity strip with 13.1 seconds left but Weiser canned a three-pointer from the top of the key with 9.9 seconds to play to force overtime.

Hall gave the Engineers their first lead of the game 40 seconds into the extra session, but Babson scored on four of its next five possessions, including a three-pointer and two free throws by Flynn for a 78-74 advantage with 1:37 to go. MIT got within one on a free throw by Nwogu with 39 seconds left but Mollica drained a short jumper along the left baseline and the Green and White went 4-of-6 at the charity stripe over the final 22 seconds to seal the win.

The Beavers shot 45.3 percent from the floor and finished with a 40-32 edge on the glass in addition to scored 33 points off of 23 MIT turnovers. The Engineers also shot 45.3 percent and outscored the hosts 42-36 in the paint.
