BRIDGEWATER, Mass.—Graduate student
Emily Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) scored 17 of her career-high 25 points in the second half to help visiting Babson College defeat Bridgewater State University, 72-63, in non-conference women's basketball action inside the Tinsley Center on Saturday afternoon.
Babson, which has won two of its last three games, improves to 5-4 overall. Bridgewater State has dropped its last four contests to slip to 1-4 on the year.
Flynn went 10-of-12 at the free throw line and added seven rebounds, five assists and three steals, while senior
Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.) scored 12 points to lead the Beavers. Sophomore
Rylie Rosenberg (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and first-year
Molly Donovan (Duxbury, Mass.) both added nine points, and sophomore
Alessa Mendoza (Yonkers, N.Y.) chipped in with seven points and four assists in the win.
Junior Sophie Bradbury (East Bridgewater, Mass.) scored 18 points, senior Haley Burchhardt (Schenectady, N.Y.) added 14 points and classmate Mairead Gallagher (Bridgewater, Mass.) finished with 11 in the loss for the Bears. Emilie von der Linden (Sanbornville, N.H.) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with eight points.
Donovan and Rosenberg both knocked down a pair of three-pointers and Flynn and Perreault combined for nine points as the Green and White shot 53.3 percent to build a 25-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. Donovan buried another triple early in the second and Flynn scored inside to make it 34-27 with 1:55 to go in the period before Bridgewater State scored nine consecutive points over the final 94 seconds of the half to take a 36-34 lead into the locker room thanks to a jumper by Burchhardt.
The Bears matched their largest lead of the afternoon at 46-42 on two free throws by von der Linden with 5:46 left in the third quarter before the Beavers closed the frame with an 11-4 spurt that included five straight points from Flynn, a three-pointer by senior
Allessia Carlo (Carmel, N.Y.) and three consecutive points by Mendoza to grad a 53-50 advantage. Flynn scored on back-to-back possessions to start the fourth and combined with Mendoza to score 10 straight points to give Babson its biggest lead of the game at 63-50 with 5:40 remaining in the contest.
The hosts answered with six consecutive points to pull within seven at the 2:59 mark, and got as close as 65-59 on a three-point play by Bradbury with 2:19 to play. Both teams came up empty on their next two possessions before the Green and White put the game away by going 7-of-10 at the charity stripe over the final 35 seconds.
The Beavers, who finished with a 45-43 edge on the glass, shot 35.9 and turned 21 Bridgewater State turnovers into 17 points. The Bears shot just 33.8 percent and were 5-of-30 (16.7 percent) from beyond the arc.
Babson is off until December 29 when it hosts Hartford in the Judy Pearson '85 Memorial Tournament at 5 p.m., while Bridgewater State travels to Brandeis on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 20-5 all-time against Bridgewater State and have won five of the last six meetings between the teams.
• Babson hit nine three-pointers in Saturday's victory and have knocked down at least six in 12 consecutive games dating back to last season.
• The Green and White has outrebounded each of its first nine opponents this season and has lost the rebounding battle just once over its last 21 contests.
