Women's Basketball Cruises Past Roger Williams in Season Opener, 71-54

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.—Junior Samantha Reale (North Attleboro, Mass.) posted a double-double and led all players with 15 points and 12 rebounds as visiting Babson College defeated Roger Williams University, 71-54, in non-conference women's basketball action on Friday night inside the Campus Recreation Center Gym.

Babson opens the season at 1-0 for the second year in a row, while Roger Williams starts 0-1 for the second time in as many years.

Graduate student Emily Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and game-high four assists, while first-year Alyssa Hopps (Quincy, Mass.) added 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting and nine boards for the Beavers. Sophomore Rylie Rosenberg (New Rochelle, N.Y.) also scored 12 points to go along with a game-high three steals and senior Allessia Carlo (Carmel, N.Y.) contributed nine points and five rebounds in the win.

Sophomore Maia Riccio (Cranston, R.I.) scored 11 points and senior Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) chipped in with 10 points, 10 rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots to pace the Hawks.

Down 6-0 less than two minutes into the contest, Roger Williams got back-to-back three-pointers from junior Chloe Richardson (Norwell, Mass.) and a layup by Coppola to take its largest lead of the game at 12-6 with 3:04 to play in the opening stanza. A jumper by Riccio kept the hosts in front 16-12 before the Green and White ripped off a 14-0 run in just over two minutes to seize control of the game.

Carlo buried a three-pointer to beat the first-quarter buzzer and Reale and Hopps combined for the first six points of the second to give the Beavers a 26-16 advantage less than a minute into the quarter. The Hawks got as close as five on a layup by junior Lilli Clark (Willimantic, Conn.) at the 3:49 mark before Babson responded with a 14-4 run to build a 15-point halftime lead.

Hopps and sophomore Julia St. Laurent (Greenland, N.H.) combined for eight straight points to make it 36-23 and Rosenberg and Flynn knocked down three-pointers over the final 34 seconds of the period to extend the margin to 42-27 at the half. Flynn then opened the second half with five straight points and Rosenberg followed two free throws by Reale with another triple to give the Beavers their largest lead of the night at 52-31 with 4:43 to go in the third.

Roger Williams got as close 64-52 on a three-pointer by Riccio with 5:14 to go in the fourth but Reale canned a triple of her own on the ensuing possession to push the margin back to 15.

The Beavers shot just 31.4 percent from the floor but knocked down 12 three-pointers and finished with a 52-37 edge on the glass. The Hawks shot 32.2 percent overall but were just 3-of-12 (25 percent) from beyond the arc.
