Women's Volleyball Outlasts William Smith, Falls to Union on Saturday in New York

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The Babson College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches against Liberty League opponents on Saturday inside the Viniar Athletic Center. 

The Beavers outlasted William Smith College in five sets, 25-15, 21-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12, in their opening match of the day before falling to Union College in straight sets, 25-20, 27-25, 25-19. 

Babson is now 18-6 on the year, Union extended its winning streak to six matches and improved to 19-8, while William Smith dropped to 19-6 overall.

Senior Isabella Allen (Williamsville, N.Y.) led four players in double figures with 15 kills and first-year Ailsa Munro (Sylmar, Calif.) recorded 10 kills in 13 attempts for a .769 hitting percentage to go along with six blocks for the Beavers. Sophomore Angelina Holm (Denver, Colo.) had 11 kills and four blocks, first-year Liberty May (Grapevine, Texas) added 11 kills, seven digs and six blocks, and junior Zoe Ackerman (Aurora, Colo.) provided season-highs of 50 assists and 16 digs to go along with four service aces in the win. 

Malya Sayre led all players with 17 kills, Arielle Newsome had five kills and a match-high eight blocks, and Delainy Williams handed out 45 assists to go along with 11 digs for the Herons. 

The teams split the first two sets without a lead change before William Smith rallied from a six-point deficit to win game three with a late 14-6 spurt. Babson returned the favor in the fourth set though, erasing an early five-point deficit and taking advantage of kill by Holm and three straight William Smith attack errors to force a decisive fifth set. 

The Green and White led by as many as three twice in game five before Sayre gave the Herons an 11-10 lead with a kill. The Beavers went back up 12-11 thanks to two straight errors and then used a kill by sophomore Sophia Ibarra (Coral Gables, Fla.) and tow more errors by William Smith to close out the victory.

Junior Hailey Fouche (Montclair, N.J.) tied for match-high honors with 13 kills to go along with four blocks, Allen added 10 kills and Ackerman handed out 30 assists to go along with nine digs to lead the Green and White. Senior Sophia Shaw (Novato, Calif.) led all players with 26 digs and sophomore Sabina Frosk (Coppell, Texas) served up a match-high five aces in the loss. 

Maddie McCarron hit .591 and recorded 13 kills, Allie Kronenberg handed out 35 assists and Graciela Escobar led the Garnet Chargers with 15 digs in the win. 

Union hit .323 in the opening set and took its largest lead at 16-11 before fending off a late rally by the Beavers. Babson trailed by as many as seven in game two before rattling off six consecutive points, which included three kills and two blocks by Fouche, to grab a 22-21 lead. 

Union scored the next three points to go back in front 24-22, but the Beavers used back-to-back kills by Fouche and another from Munro for a 25-24 advantage. The Garnet Chargers responded with a three-point run of their own getting a kill from Georgia Pinciaro and two more from Kayla Martinez Cartagena for a 27-25 victory and a two-set advantage in the match. 

The lead changed hands three times early in the third before Union seized command for good with a 13-5 run that extended its advantage to 19-12. The hosts hit .243 in the frame and put away 13 kills to complete the sweep. 

Babson returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Clark at 7 p.m., while Union faces the same Cougars on the road in Worcester on Thursday at 7 p.m. 

MATCH NOTES
•    The Beavers are 1-0 all-time against William Smith and 1-3 versus Union. 
•    Shaw, who played the 100th match of her career in the victory over William Smith, became just the 11th player in school history to surpass 1,000 career digs on Saturday. 
•    The Green and White recorded a season-high 59 kills in the win over the Herons and totaled its most digs in a three-set match (61) in the loss to Union.
•    The Beavers' win over William Smith was their first after splitting the first two sets and then trailing 2-1 in the match since the first round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
