Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Gets Past Smith, 2-1

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.— Senior Izzy DeMatos (Holmdel, N.J.) and junior Caroline Sutherland (Millville, Mass.) each scored their first goal of the season as Babson College defeated Smith College, 2-1, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer match Wednesday afternoon at the Smith Soccer Field.

With the victory, the Beavers are 4-1-1 in the month of October and are now 7-2-5 overall and 6-1-1 in NEWMAC games. Smith has lost three of its last four and falls to 3-10-1 overall and 2-6-0 in conference play.

First-year keeper Maisie Creamer (Boulder, Colo.) made one save to record the victory for the Beavers, improving to 3-1-1 in her first five collegiate games.

First-year Jenna Marsh (Barnstable, Mass.) scored the Smith goal on a penalty kick in the 78th minute. Senior Sky Smith (Carlisle, Mass.) had a busy day in goal for the Bears and finished with a career-high 14 saves.

Babson kept the ball in the Smith end of the field and had several scoring opportunities in the first half. Junior Claudia Baiter (Miami, Fla.) had a shot from close range go over the top of the crossbar in the 13th minute, and sophomore Mack Feeney (North Attleboro, Mass.) was sent in on a near breakaway in the 22nd minute on a through ball by sophomore Lillian McAughan (Bellevue, Wash.) but was denied by Smith.

The Beavers finally broke through in the 39th minute as DeMatos booted a loose ball from just above the 18-yard box past a diving Smith and into the upper right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead. Babson had a 9-1 advantage in shot through the opening 45 minutes.

Junior Una Keller (Davis, Calif.) nearly tied the score early in the second half but her line-drive shot from 30 yards out went off the crossbar. Meanwhile, the Green and White continued to pressure the Smith half of the field after the intermission, as sophomore Josie Lee (Duxbury, Mass.) and McAughan had consecutive shots stopped by Smith in the 55th minute.

The Green and White doubled their lead on a corner kick in the 59th minute. Lee inserted the corner from the left side, which was knocked down by the Smith defense, and Sutherland buried the rebound into the top of the net for a 2-0 advantage.

First-year Izzy Reidy (Needham, Mass.) made a nice move along with right end line and centered a pass but Smith made a pair of saves on first-year Sarah Hogan (South Glastonbury, Conn.) midway through the half. Smith also made a stop on first-year Autumn Simon (Sharon, Mass.) in the 75th minute after a cross by DeMatos.

Smith cut the deficit in half when a Bears' player was fouled inside the box, and Marsh scored her fifth goal of the season on the penalty kick in the 78th minute.

The Beavers kept the ball in the Smith end of the field for most of the remainder of the game to secure the win. Sophomore Rylie Wesley (Norfolk, Mass.), McAughan and Lee all had shots at extending the Babson lead but were turned away by Smith.

The Green and White finished with a 24-5 margin in total shots, including 16-2 in shots on target, while taking seven corner kicks to one for Smith.

Both teams are back in action with a NEWMAC match on Saturday as Babson travels to Wheaton for a 1 p.m. match and Smith visits Salve Regina for a 12 p.m. kick-off.
