No. 6 Field Hockey Pulls Out Win Over Roger Williams in Overtime, 2-1

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Junior Helen DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season on a rebound in the fifth minute of overtime as No. 6 Babson College pulled out a 2-1 victory over Roger Williams University in a non-conference field hockey game Wednesday evening at MacDowell Field.

With their fifth consecutive victory, the Beavers improve to 9-1 overall while the Hawks had a three-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 7-4.

Senior Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) also scored for the Green and White and first-year Madison Tibbals (Gorham, Maine) finished with two saves in the victory.

Senior Chelsea King (Albany, N.Y.) scored for the Hawks, who got eight saves from senior keeper Hannah Brazil (Sandwich, Mass.).

The game-winning goal came as a result of a Babson penalty corner. After first-year Anna Bonazzoli's  (Clinton, Mass.) crossing pass was deflected inside the scoring circle, Helen DiGiovanni pounced on the loose ball and ripped a shot into the back of the cage to clinch the victory.

Neither team was able to generate much offense in the opening 15 minutes, with the Beavers managing just three shots and the Hawks one. Babson upped the pressure on the RWU goal in the second stanza with seven shots, but Brazil made four saves to keep the game scoreless at the intermission.

The upset-minded Hawks got on the scoreboard first on a penalty corner in the 34th minute. After King inserted the corner from the left side and junior Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.) fired a shot from the top of the circle, Tibbals stopped the shot but King, who had rushed into position near the left post, popped in the rebound for her team-leading 14th goal of the season.

Another Babson corner led to the Beavers getting on the scoreboard just four minutes later. After junior Grace Mullaney (Boxford, Mass.) inserted the corner, Brazil made back-to-back saves on sophomore Penny Baroni (Dennis, Mass.) and senior Alex Michelotti (Edgewood, Colo.), but Caroline DiGiovanni buried the rebound on a third attempt for her team-leading 10th goal of the year.

Neither team was able to muster a shot the rest of the third quarter or the entire fourth frame, setting up the overtime and Helen's game-winner.

The Beavers finished with a 14-4 advantage in total shots with a 4-3 margin in shots on goal. The hosts had a commanding 11-2 margin in penalty corners, including 7-1 in the second quarter.

Babson returns to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action when they host WPI on Saturday at 12 p.m. at MacDowell Field. Roger Williams returns home for a Conference of New England (CNE) contest against Johnson & Wales Saturday at 12 p.m.
