Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Senier, Mueller Lead Men’s Ice Hockey Past No. 8 Trinity, 2-1

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Sophomore Sean Senior tallied a goal and an assist and junior Nate Mueller (Rogers, Minn.) made 32 saves between the pipes as Babson College pulled off a 2-1 victory over No. 8 Trinity College in a non-conference men's ice hockey game Saturday afternoon inside the Babson Skating Center.

The Beavers won their third consecutive game for the second time this season to improve to 7-5-1 overall while Trinity dropped its second outing in three days to dip to 6-3-1 on the season.

Junior Brendan Kennedy (Georgetown, Ont,) also scored for the Beavers and classmate Egan Schmitt (Schuylerville, N.Y.) and graduate student Kyle Gierman (Shelby Township, Mich.) produced assists in the win. Mueller stopped all 13 shots he faced in the third period to register his third straight victory.

First-year Ty Broad (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for the Bantams with assists from sophomore Jakob Karpa (Newport Beach, Calif.) and senior Chase McInnis (Hingham, Mass.). Junior Devon Bobak (Northwood, Ohio) made 30 saves in goal but suffered the loss.

The teams exchanged goals just 49 seconds apart in the first six minutes of the game. Babson struck first at 5:05 when Kennedy pounded a rebound into an empty net after Bobak had made a stop on Senier from close range. Trinity answered at 5:54 when Karpa's shot from the right point deflected off Broad and into the back of the net to tie it at 1-1.

The Beavers regained the lead five minutes into the second period when Gierman's attempt from the left point was deflected in front of the Bantam goal and Senior pounced on the loose puck and buried what would turn out to be the game winner. Babson had a 10-7 shot advantage in the middle frame and took the one-goal lead into the third.

Trinity turned up the pressure on the Babson net in the final 20 minutes, outshooting the hosts 13-9. Mueller made a terrific stop on first-year Ryan Panico (Southport, Conn.) early in the period and Bobak denied Senier on an insurance marker with a big save with eight minutes remaining.

The visitors could not convert on a power play attempt with seven minutes remaining, and Mueller preserved the victory with four saves in the final two minutes after Trinity pulled Bobak for an extra attacker with 2:04 on the clock.

Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play, and Trinity finished with a slim 33-32 advantage in shots on goal.

Babson will play New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) games the rest of the way, beginning with home games against Vermont State Castleton next Friday and Saturday. Trinity returns to New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action on Friday at Middlebury and Saturday at Williams.
