NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—Graduate student Ally Landau (Livingston, N.J.) and sophomore Hannah Martin (North Andover, Mass.) combined for 11 fourth-quarter points to help No. 7 D3hoops.com/No. 7 WBCA Smith College defeat visiting Babson College, 57-50, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday night inside Ainsworth Gymnasium.
Babson has dropped two consecutive games to slip to 8-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play, while Smith improves to 14-1 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC with its 10th consecutive victory.
Senior
Katelyn Mollica (Foxborough, Mass.) went 4-of-6 from three-point range on the way to scoring 12 points, while junior
Allessia Carlo (Carmel, N.Y.) added 11 points, four rebounds and a career-high four steals to lead the Beavers. First-year
Mary Kate Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) also contributed a season-high eight points and tied for team-high honors with six boards in the loss.
Landau led all scorers with 18 points to go along with four rebounds, four blocks and two steals, while Martin finished with 16 points and four boards to pace the Pioneers. Senior Jane Loo (Saratoga, Calif.) chipped in with seven points and game-highs of seven boards and three assists in the win.
Trailing 35-27 at halftime and down by 10 with just over six minutes to play in the third quarter, the Green and White went on a 16-2 run to take its first lead of the game. Carlo got things started with a hoop in transition, Mollica knocked down a three-pointer from the left wing and then followed a bucket inside by Flynn with her third triple of the period to tie the game at 42-42.
Sophomore Uta Nakamura (Manhattan, N.Y.) converted a driving layup to put Smith back up two but first-year
Julia St. Laurent (Greenland, N.H.) converted a three-point play with 1:07 left in the stanza and classmate
Madison Hart (Greenwich, Conn.) followed with another three-point play to give the Beavers' their largest advantage of the night at 48-44 with 33 seconds to play in the stanza.
Martin hit two free throws in the closing seconds of the third and opened the fourth quarter with five quick points to put the Pioneers back in front 51-48 with 8:32 remaining before both teams went ice cold. Carlo went 1-of-2 at the charity stripe with 5:59 left to make it a two-point game and Laudau ended a scoring drought of more than five minutes with a foul line jumper to give the hosts a 53-49 edge with 3:08 to play.
Carlo went 1-of-2 at the free throw line on the ensuing possession but Babson followed with two consecutive empty trips before Landau knocked down another mid-range jumper for a 55-50 lead with 48 seconds remaining.
Down 14-3 less than four minutes into the contest, the Green and White got back within five and then went 7-of-10 from the floor in the second quarter to get as close as five twice over the final 4:07 of the frame.
The Beavers, who shot 55.8 percent over the first three quarters, went 0-of-15 from the floor in the fourth to finish the night at 38.8 percent. They also outrebounded the hosts 31-28 in the loss. The Pioneers shot 40.7 percent from the floor and turned 19 turnovers by the Green and White into 21 points.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson travels to Salve Regina at 1 p.m., while Smith hosts Wheaton at 2 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 40-19 all-time against Smith but have dropped their last seven games to the Pioneers.
• Babson (3) and Smith (2) combined for just five offensive rebounds in Wednesday's contest.
• Wednesday's loss snapped the Beavers' eight game winning streak against NEWMAC foes when allowing fewer than 60 points.
• With four three-pointers against the Pioneers, Mollica is up to 183 for her career and is just seven away from Erin Young's '15 program record of 190.
