Men's Hoops Shoots Past Salve Regina, 84-66

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Graduate student Alex Stoddard (Wellesley, Mass.) scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the first half as Babson College defeated visiting Salve Regina University, 84-66, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Tuesday night inside Staake Gymnasium.

Babson, which has won seven of its last nine games, improves to 10-6 overall and 4-3 in conference play. Salve Regina drops to 6-10 overall and 3-4 in the NEWMAC with the loss.

Stoddard canned a career-high seven three-pointers and added three rebounds and three assists to pace four players in double figures. First-year Vaughn Foster (Paramus, N.J.) scored a season-high 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting, classmate Timmy Mulvey (Reading, mass.) contributed 17 points and three boards, and senior Nate Amado (Hanson, Mass.) finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals in the win.

Junior Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) chipped in with eight points and classmate Tyler Lauder (Malvern, Pa.) tied for game-high honors with a career-high six assists for Babson.

Graduate student Brad Fowler (Colden, N.Y.) scored 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and senior Will Parisi (Wyckoff, N.J.) came off the bench to score 10 points for the Seahawks.

Salve Regina erased an early 17-8 deficit with a 12-2 run to grab a 20-19 lead on a layup by sophomore Pat Spenard (Rochester, Mass.) with 10:08 left in the first half. The Green and White, which shot 55.9 percent and went 11-of-18 (61.1 percent) from beyond the arc in the opening stanza, answered with an 18-6 spurt that included a trio of three-pointers by Stoddard to go back in front 37-26 at the 4:07 mark.

Junior Jack McMullen (East Greenwich, R.I.) cut the Seahawks' deficit to eight on the ensuing possession but Mulvey knocked down his second triple of the period and Stoddard sandwiched his sixth trifecta of the half in between three-pointers by Foster to give the Beavers a 50-38 advantage going to the locker room.

The hosts got a bucket from Amado and a jumper by Mulvey less than 90 seconds into the second half to extend the margin to 54-38 and Foster made four consecutive free throws to give Babson its largest lead of the game at 60-42 with 15:01 to play in the game. After cutting its deficit to 13 twice, Salve Regina used two free throws by Spenard, a hoop by Fowler and three-pointer by Parisi to get as close as 64-56 with 9:03 remaining before the Beavers answered back with a 13-5 run to put the game away.

Mulvey knocked down a pair of triples, Foster followed up a transition dunk with an offensive rebound and putback, and first-year Ryan Frauenheim (Manasquan, N.J.) canned another three-ball to make it 77-61 with 4:26 to go.

The Green and White knocked down 15 three-pointers and shot a season-best 54.4 percent from the floor in the win. The Beavers also finished with a 31-27 edge on the glass. The Seahawks shot 53.3 percent in the first half and 47.3 percent for the game in the loss.
