No. 6 Field Hockey Too Strong for Wheaton in NEWMAC Affair, 7-0

NORTON, Mass. — Junior Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) scored twice and six different players found the back of the net as No. 6 Babson College cruised past Wheaton College, 7-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action Friday evening at Nordin Field.

The Beavers improved to 6-3 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 2-0 while Wheaton lost for the third time in in its last four games and fell to 6-3 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.

Graduate student Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.), seniors Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.) and Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.), junior Ally Antonacci (Skillman, N.J.) and sophomore Helen DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) all scored goals for the Beavers. Senior Ellie Powers (Bethlehem, Pa.), juniors Alex Michelotti (Englewood, Colo.) and Sanne van der Goes (Glenview, Ill.) and graduate student Katie Guden (Belmont, Mass.) collected assists, and senior Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) was not forced to make any saves but recorded her fifth shutout of the season.

Sophomore Grace Ferguson (Williston, Vt.) had a busy night in the Wheaton goal and finished with nine saves.

The Beavers controlled the first quarter, outshooting the hosts 5-0, but didn't get on the scoreboard until securing a penalty corner late in the frame. Powers took the insertion at the top of the circle and sent a pass to Sharrow on the left, and she ripped a shot through traffic in front of the cage that hit the back of the goal for a 1-0 lead after one frame.

The Green and White doubled the lead in the early going of the second quarter. Michelotti dribbled the ball into the circle on the right side and passed to Caroline DiGiovanni in the slot, and she pounded home a shot past the goalie into the right side of the net. Marguerite made it 3-0 five minutes later when she intercepted a Wheaton clear just outside the circle, went to her right to move inside the circle, then blasted a shot through the goalie's pads.

Early in the third quarter, Ferguson made a nice save on Michelotti from the slot, but Caroline DiGiovanni collected the rebound, spun around and fired a shot through the defense and into the back of the goal for a 4-0 advantage. Moments later, van der Goes carried the ball down the right side and along the goal line before sliding a pass in front, where Heled DiGiovanni one-timed a shot past the goalie to push the margin to 5-0. Evans rounded out the third-quarter scoring when she finished off a pass by Guden from the left end line for a six-goal lead after three quarters.

The Beavers got their final goal in the fourth quarter on a penalty corner. Wheaton junior defender Abby Miller (Andover, Mass.) made a defensive save on a shot by Powers but Antonucci dug out the rebound and flipped it into the net for her first goal of the season.

Babson outshot the hosts 28-1, including 17 shots in target, and finished with a 10-1 margin in penalty corners.

The Green and White will be back in action on Tuesday with its fourth straight road game at WPI at 6 p.m. Wheaton is off until traveling to MIT on October 5 for a 1 p.m. encounter.
