Baseball Outslugs Coast Guard to Stay Unbeaten in NEWMAC Tournament, 12-10

NEW LONDON, Conn.—Third-seeded Babson College scored eight runs in the fourth inning and five relievers combined to allow just one run over the final 4.1 innings as it went on to defeat the second-seeded Coast Guard Academy, 12-10, in game three of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Nitchman Field.

With their seventh consecutive victory, Babson improves to 27-10 overall. Coast Guard, which lost for just the third time in its last 15 outings, dips to 24-10 on the year with the loss.

Graduate student John Nowak (Pelham, N.Y.) hit a three-run homer an knocked in a season-high five runs, senior Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and graduate student Luke Tanner (Los Angeles, Calif.) and senior Ike Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) both doubled and scored twice while recording two hits apiece for the Beavers. Fellow senior Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) also had two hits  and classmate Jimmy Weick (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) improved to 1-1 with the win in relief.

Junior Parker Madden (Ruston, La.) was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and three runs scored, while sophomore Kael Godshalk (Bangor, Pa.) and classmate Luke Percifield (Pinellas Park, Fla.) both had two hits and drove in a run for the Bears. First-year Vito Giordano (Scarsdale, N.Y.) shouldered the loss to drop to 3-2 after allowing nine runs over 4.0 innings.

Coast Guard took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first on Madden's two-run shot to right and first-year Carson Cho (Haymarket, Va.) capped a three-run third with an RBI single to center that extended the margin to 5-1. The Green and White answered right back though, erupting for eight runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good.

Junior Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) got things started with a two-run single to center, Kiely scored on Julian's sacrifice fly and Santos plated Sadowsky with a single to left to make it 5-5. Tanner smashed a double to left that brought home Santos and Nowak hammered a three-run homer to right to give the Beavers a 9-5 lead.

Senior Luca Rubin (Los Angeles, Calif.) knocked in Kiely with a sacrifice fly to make it 10-5 in the top of the fifth before the Bears responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Godshalk doubled to right center to score senior John Tacchini (Klamath Falls, Ore.) and Cho drew a bases-loaded walk to trim the margin to one before Weick got first-year Nathan Stafford (Jupiter, Fla.) to fly out to ending the inning.

Babson loaded the bases to start the top of the sixth and extended its lead back to 12-9 thanks to an RBI walk by Nowak and an RBI ground out by junior Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.). Senior John Carroll (Yardley, Pa.) came through with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to make it a two run game before the Beavers' relief corps helped put the game away.

Junior Luke McClintock (South Hamilton, Mass.) got a double play to end the seventh, graduate student Zach Magee (Indianapolis, Ind.) got the first two outs in the eighth and sophomore Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) got a ground out to help him escape a bases-loaded jam before working around a one-out single in the ninth for his fifth save.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson faces fourth-seeded Wheaton at 12:30 p.m., while Coast Guard takes on top-seeded Salve Regina in an elimination game at 9:30 a.m. in Newport, R.I.
