Baseball Wraps Up NEWMAC Play with Sweep of Springfield

Beaves Secure Third Seed in Upcoming NEWMAC Tournament

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore James Clark (Southborough, Mass.) recorded a career-high nine strikeouts in the opener and senior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) matched the program's single-season record for doubles in game two as Babson College swept visiting Springfield College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Govoni Field.

The Beavers took game one 4-1 and then defeated the Pride 10-3 in the nightcap. Babson, which is ranked third in the NCAA Region I rankings, has won four consecutive games to improve to 24-10 overall and 12-4 in conference play, while Springfield ends its year at 16-21 overall and 2-14 in the NEWMAC.

Game 1: Babson 4, Springfield 1
Clark carried a no-hitter into the seventh and allowed no runs on just one hit over 7.0 innings to improve to 5-2 with the win. Graduate student Luke Tanner (Los Angeles, Calif.) doubled, while classmate John Nowak (Pelham, N.Y.) and junior Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) both singled as the Beavers won despite being limited to a season-low three hits.

Senior Connor Caverly (South Berwick, Maine), who dropped to 2-4 with the loss, struck out nine and allowed two earned runs on just one hit over 6.0 innings for the Pride.

The Green and White had just one base runner of the first four innings before scoring three times without the benefit of a hit in the fifth. After loading the bases with nobody out, senior Ike Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) brought home Nowak with an RBI ground out, first-year Dante D'Avanzo (Ashland, Mass.) scored on an error and Kiely capped the rally by racing home on a wild pitch.

Babson tacked on another insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Guest reached with a two-out infield single, stole second and got to third on a wild pitch before coming around on Nowak's RBI single to center to make it 4-0. Springfield graduate student Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) broke up the shutout with a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth before Beavers' graduate student Zach Magee (Indianapolis, Ind.) got a fly ball to centerfield to end the game.

Game 2: Babson 10, Springfield 3
Senior Luca Rubin (Los Angeles, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI and Tanner was 3-for-5 with a double as eight different players recorded a hit in the nightcap for the Beavers. Guest was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Kiely doubled, knocked in a run and scored twice, and Savage smacked his 18th double of the season in the win.

Barrett, graduate student Adam Fine (Wynnewood, Pa.) and sophomore Ryan Duffy (Stafford Springs, Conn.) each had two hits for the Pride, which left 11 men on base in the loss.

Down 2-1 going to the bottom of the third, Babson scored five times to seize control of the game. Guest and Nowak recorded back-to-back RBI singles to take a 3-2 lead, Kiely doubled to right to bring home Nowak and Rubin capped the uprising with a two-run double to right for a 6-2 advantage.

Senior Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) scored on a double steal as part of a two-run sixth inning and Rubin launched a two-run homer to left, his first of the year in the seventh, as the margin swelled to 10-2.

Senior Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.), who made just his second start of the year, improved to 1-1 after giving up two runs in 3.0 innings. Junior Matt Milone (Amston, Conn.) recorded the longest outing of his career, striking out six and allowing just one run over 6.0 innings out of the bullpen to collect his first save of the year.

Babson returns to action on Sunday when it hosts UMass Boston at 11 a.m.
