No. 21 Baseball Falls in NCAA Tournament Elimination Game to UMass Dartmouth, 7-3

BABSON PARK, Mass.—No. 21 Babson College got multi-hit games from three different players but saw its season come to an end with a 7-3 loss to UMass Dartmouth in an NCAA Tournament elimination game at the Babson Park Regional on Saturday morning at Govoni Field.

Babson, which suffered back-to-back losses for the first time in over a month, sees its season come to a close at 30-13. UMass Dartmouth has now won five of its last six games to improve to 25-19-1 overall and will face either No. 9/11 Salisbury University or Mitchell College later on Saturday afternoon.

Graduate student John Nowak (Pelham, N.Y.) and seniors Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) and Luca Rubin (Los Angeles, Calif.) all finished 2-for-4, while junior Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) and senior Ike Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) both scored a run for the Beavers. Sophomore Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) also singled and drove in a run in the loss.

Junior Devyn Vezina (Coventry, R.I.) went 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored, while classmate Scott Cromack (Kingstown, R.I.) knocked in a pair of runs for the Corsairs. Graduate student Anthony Keefe (Plymouth, Mass.) improved to 3-1 on the year after giving up just two earned runs on six hits to go along with four strikeouts over 7.0 innings.

Vezina gave UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and the Green and White stranded a pair of runners in each of the first two frames before pulling even on Nowak's infield single in the top of the third. The Corsairs struck back in the fourth though, taking advantage of three Babson errors to push across four runs.

Vezina got things started with a single and then stole second before scoring on senior Andrew Possi's (Milton, Mass.) fielder's choice two batters later. Graduate student Joe Muzio (Rockport, Mass.) scored on a throwing error and Cromack capped the uprising with a two-out, two-run single up the middle to give UMass Dartmouth a 5-1 advantage.

The Beavers got singles from Guest and Julian before leaving the bases loaded in the sixth and Vezina added to the Corsairs' lead with a two-run homer to right center in the bottom of the seventh. Babson did not go quietly though, loading the bases again with one out in the eighth as Kiely walked and Rubin singled to left after Guest was plunked. Hvozdovic hit a line drive off of sophomore pitcher Aidan O'Donnell (Abington, Mass.) to bring home guest and senior Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) followed with an RBI ground out to make it 7-3.

Senior Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth but O'Donnell worked around a one-out walk to Nowak in the ninth to seal the win for the Corsairs.

Graduate student Greg Nieskens (Pine Brook, N.J.) shouldered the loss for Babson despite allowing just one earned run on four hits over 4.0 innings.
