Softball Sweeps a Pair of One-Run Games from Framingham State, 1-0 and 3-2

BABSON PARK, Mass.— First-year Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) tossed a shutout in the opener and senior Caroline Taylor (Biddeford, Maine) delivered a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap as Babson College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Framingham State University Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Beavers pulled out the first game behind Vlacich, 1-0, and rallied to take the nightcap, 3-2. Babson has won three in a row to improve to 11-12 on the season while Framingham State fell to 10-10.

Game 1 -- Babson 1, Framingham State 0

Vlacich scattered six hits and two walks while striking out two for her second shutout of the season, evening her record at 5-5. Classmate Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) singled and drove in a run, fellow first-year Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) singled, stole a base and scored a run, and graduate students Michaela Russell (Boston, Mass.) and Cassidy Musco (Walpole, Mass.) also collected hits as the Beavers managed just four hits in the win.

Senior Gwendolyn Carpenter (Ashley Falls, Mass.) went 3-for-3 for the Rams and first-year Eliza Carignan (Epsom, N.H.) doubled in the setback. Juniors Brooke Grassia (Danvers, Mass.) and Shelby Roode (Ashaway, R.I.) also produced singles for the Rams. Senior Ally Moran (Wilmington, Mass.) allowed just one unearned run on four hits and no walks, striking out five, but suffered just her second loss of the season (7-2).

Babson scored the only run in the fourth inning when Walsh singled, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Raymond's two-out single to left.

Vlacich worked out of a jam in the first inning after the Rams put two runners in scoring position with one out, striking out the next two batters. She benefitted from Babson double plays in the third and fourth innings and didn't allow a runner past second base the rest of the way.

Game 2 – Babson 3, Framingham State 2

Russell went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Musco had a single and an RBI for the Beavers, and Raymond and first-year Jackie Paglieri (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) added hits in the win. Senior Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) earned the complete-game victory (6-7), allowing two runs on eight hits, striking out 11 and not walking a batter.

Junior Makayla Rooney (Peabody, Mass.) had a single and a double and drove in a run for the Rams, and Roode singled and knocked in a run. Carpenter had a pair of singles and scored a run, and Grassia, Carignan and first-year Marina Cadena (West Wareham, Mass.) also had singles  in the setback. Senior Caroline Hughes (Canton, Mass.) suffered a tough-luck loss after pitching shutout ball through six innings before being touched for three runs in the seventh.

The Rams jumped on top in the top of the first inning when Rooney doubled to left with one out and later scored on Roode's single through the right side. The visitors doubled their lead in the fifth inning when Carpenter singled with two outs, stole second and raced home on Rooney's single up the middle.

Hughes didn't allow a hit until Russell's two-out single in the fourth inning and surrendered just two hits through six innings before the Beavers broke through in the seventh. Russell led off with a single to right and advanced to third on an outfield error. After Hughes retired the next two batters, Musco reached on an infield single to score Russell, Paglieri hit a knock to right center and advanced to second on the throw to put two runners in scoring position, and Taylor pushed a game-winning two-out, two-strike single to left field to score Musco and Pagieri with the winning run.

Babson returns to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Friday with a doubleheader at Smith, beginning at 3 p.m. Framingham State gets back to Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) competition on Saturday at Worcester State at 12 p.m.
