NORTON, Mass.—Senior
Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) tossed a four-hit shutout in game two to help visiting Babson College earn a split of Saturday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader at Wheaton College.
The Beavers dropped the opener 5-4 before bouncing back with a 1-0 victory in the nightcap. Babson, which has won four of its last five games, is now 12-13 overall and 3-5 in conference play, while Wheaton is 13-10 overall and 7-1 in the NEWMAC.
Game 2: Babson 1, Wheaton 0
O'Reilly struck out six and allowed just four singles to improve to 7-7 on the year while moving into a tie for second place on the Beavers' all-time list with her 18th career shutout. First-year
Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) doubled and scored, while graduate student
Michaela Russell (Boston, Mass.), junior
Athena Hadjipanayis (Rye, N.Y.) and first-year
Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) all singled in the win.
Junior Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.) went 2-for-3 at the plate and sophomore Amber Arcand (Millville, Mass.), who dropped to 1-4 on the year, struck out four and gave up just one run on five hits in the circle for the Lyons.
The Green and White stranded a runner on second in the first, second and sixth innings, while O'Reilly struck out the side in the fifth and got Wheaton to ground into double plays in both the fourth and the sixth to keep the game scoreless. Raymond led off the top of the seventh with a double to left and moved to third on graduate student
Cassidy Musco's (Walpole, Mass.) sacrifice bunt before scoring on an error one batter later for the only run of the game.
O'Reilly got the first two batters in the bottom of the frame to fly out to right before recording her sixth strikeout to end the game.
Game 1: Wheaton 5, Babson 4
Junior
Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) went 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBI, Musco went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and Hadjipanayis doubled to lead the Beavers' eight-hit attack. Graduate student
Kate Karamouzis (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) also reached base three times in the loss.
Junior Jillian Rohon (Southington, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, sophomore Peyton Blankenheim-Brown (Rio Linda, Calif.) was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored and Zito singled, walked and knocked in a pair of runs for the Lyons. Senior Sophia Knopf (Norton, Mass.) improved to 7-4 despite giving up four runs on six hits over 4.1 innings, while sophomore Brittany Dost (Centereach, N.Y.) recorded the final eight outs to earn her first save.
Babson jumped on top 2-0 in the top of the second when Moore tripled to center with two outs to bring home Musco and first-year
Jackie Paglieri (Upper Saddle River, N.J.). Wheaton answered right back though, as Rohon came through with a two-out double to left to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.
The Beavers went back in front in the top of the fourth as Karamouzis was plunked with the bases loaded to force in a run before Walsh reached on an error allowing Musco to score to make it 4-2. The Lyons answered back in the bottom of the frame though as Zito tied things up with a two-out double to left and first-year Ella Molinari (Grafton, Mass.) followed with an infield single to give the hosts a 5-4 advantage.
The Green and White wasted Hadjipanayis' double to start the fifth and lined into an inning-ending double play in the sixth.
Babson travels to Smith for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday, while Wheaton hosts MIT for a twin bill on Monday at 3 p.m.
