Softball Drops Two at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Springfield College put together a pair of four-run fourth-inning uprisings on the way to sweeping visiting Babson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Potter Field.

Babson (8-11, 1-3 NEWMAC) dropped the opener 9-1 in six innings and suffered a 5-2 loss to the Pride (15-2-1, 4-0 NEWMAC) in game two.

Game 1: Springfield 9, Babson 1 (6 inn.)
Junior Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) went 2-for-3, first-year Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) had an RBI single and graduate student Kate Karamouzis (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) doubled and scored for the Beavers. Senior Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) suffered the loss in the circle falling to 4-7 on the year after giving up eight runs over 4.1 innings.

Senior Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with three RBI, classmate Michaela Ponticello (Gloversville, N.Y.) was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and fellow seniors Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) and Alli Olsen (Ridgewood, N.J.) both tripled and scored a pair of runs to lead the Pride. Sophomore Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) allowed one run while scattering seven hits in a complete-game effort to improve to 7-2 in the circle.

Karamouzis led off the top of the fourth with a double and scored on Raymond's single to left two batters later to tie the game at 1-1 before Springfield responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Graduate student Emily Whalen (Hopkinton, Mass.) reached with a two-out bunt single and sophomore Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) walked before Gendron cleared the bases with a double to right center for a 4-1 advantage.

Pecchia came through with a two-run single to center as the Pride scored three times in the fifth to make it 8-1, and DeRosa doubled to drive in Olsen in for the game's final run in the bottom of the sixth after Babson left the bases loaded in the top of the frame.

Game 2: Springfield 5, Babson 2
First-year Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) was 2-for-3, junior Athena Hadjipanayis (Rye, N.Y.) singled and scored and Raymond knocked in a pair of runs for the Green and White. Senior Molly Hennessy (Tallahassee, Fla.) tripled and scored, and first-year Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) dropped to 4-4 on the year after allowing four earned runs in 6.0 innings.

DeRosa went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored and Whalen singled twice and drove in a run for the Pride. Senior Ashley Pugliese (Long Island, N.Y.) improved to 6-0 after giving up one earned run over 7.0 innings.

Vlacich gave up just one run after Springfield loaded the bases with one out in the first. The Beavers tied the game when Hennessy scored on Raymond's RBI ground out in the second and took a 2-1 lead when Hadjipanayis raced home on another RBI ground out by Raymond in the fourth.

The Pride responded with a four-run fourth that included RBI singles from Olsen, Whelan and Pecchia, and a sacrifice fly from Gendron to go in front 5-2. The Beavers left a pair on base in the fifth and got the potential tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh before Pugliese got a ground ball to shortstop to end the game.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday as Babson hosts No. 22 MIT at 11 a.m., while Springfield faces Wellesley at 12 p.m.
