No. 29 Men's Tennis Falls to No. 21 MIT in NEWMAC Tournament Final, 5-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—No. 29 Babson College suffered a 5-0 loss to No. 21 MIT in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament final at the DuPont Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon. 

Babson, which lost for the first time in eight matches, sees its season come to a close with an overall record of 14-9. MIT, which captured its 24th NEWMAC championship, improves to 18-3 and will find out where it is headed for the NCAA Tournament on May 6. 

For the second time this season, the Beavers found themselves in a 3-0 hole after doubles. Graduate students Andrew Watson (Charlottesville, Va.) and Jonah Wilson (Gilbert, Ariz.) dropped an 8-2 decision to Joseph Li (Naperville, Ill.) and Sundeep Chakladar (Redondo Beach, Calif.) at number two, and junior Wesley Zhang (Staten Island, N.Y.) and first-year Caymus Choi (Hong Kong, China) fell 8-3 to Kailas Kahler (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Adam Sun (Glendale, Ariz.) at number three. 

MIT's duo of Daniel Papacica (Carmel, Calif.) and Grant Gallagher (Irvine, Calif.) completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory over Babson junior Ole Lepsoe (Oslo, Norway) and first-year Logan Back (Busan, South Korea) at number one.

The Engineers picked up their first singles point at number six as Shrish Choudhary (Fremont, Calif.) defeated Beavers' senior Jose Gonzalez (Mexico City, Mexico), 6-1, 6-3, while the decisive point came at number three where Ryan Xiao (Cary, N.C.) downed first-year Kerem Ozlale (Istanbul, Turkey) 6-0, 3-6, 6-2. 

Wilson won a first-set tiebreaker over Kahler at number one and Watson took the opening set against Sun at number four for the Green and White. Choi and and MIT's Siddharth Marathe (Pune, India) split the first two sets at number five, while Lepsoe was up 5-4 in the second after dropping the first set at number two when the match reached decision. 

MATCH NOTES
•    Babson's 14 wins this season are tied with the 2014-15 and 2018-19 squads for the second highest total in program history. 
•    The Beavers finished the year with a 3-6 mark against opponents ranked in the ITA Top 40. 
•    The Green and White made its ninth NEWMAC Tournament championship match since 2013 on Sunday.
