Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) all recorded victories in singles and doubles to help No. 21 Babson College defeat visiting Wellesley College, 7-2, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon at the Babson Tennis Courts.
Babson, which picked up its third consecutive win, ends the regular season at 12-5 overall and 8-1 in conference play, and will be the second seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament. Wellesley, which will be seeded third, drops to 11-5 overall and 7-2 in league play.
The Beavers won two of three doubles matches as Soffer and Cristiani recorded an 8-1 victory at number one, while Moschella and first-year
Dana Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) cruised to an 8-2 triumph at number three. Sophomore
Elena Keitt (Austin, Texas) and first-year
Chaniel Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) dropped an 8-4 decision to sophomore Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and first-year Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) of the Blue at number two.
All five of Babson's singles wins came in straight sets, beginning with seventh-ranked
Olivia Soffer's 6-1, 6-2 victory at number one and second-ranked Cristiani's 6-0, 6-3 triumph at number two.
Chaniel Soffer was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at number three, while Keitt and Moschella both posted 6-1, 6-2 results at fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
Wellesley's lone singles point came at number four where Pak defeated Beavers' sophomore
Mariana Campos (Houston, Texas), 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.
Babson returns to action next Saturday at 12 p.m. when it hosts either third-seeded Wellesley or sixth-seeded Springfield in a NEWMAC Tournament semifinal.
MATCH NOTES
• The Beavers have won three straight and 10 of their last 13 matches against Wellesley, which includes seven in a row at home going back to the fall of 2014.
• Babson has led after doubles in 14 of 17 matches on the year.
• Cristiani and Soffer improved to 26-2 on the year in doubles, and Cristiani's 50 combined singles and doubles victories are just four shy of the program's single-season record of 54 achieved by Soffer last year.
