Baseball Rallies Late in Game Two, Splits Extra-Inning Decisions in Doubleheader at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn.—Visiting Babson College and the Coast Guard Academy split a pair of extra-inning affairs in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Nitchman Field.

The Beavers rallied for a 6-4 victory in 10 innings in game two after suffering a 4-3 10-inning loss to the Bears in the opener. Babson, which has won seven of its last nine games, is now 21-10 overall and 9-4 in conference play, while Coast Guard runs its record to 21-9 overall and 10-3 in the NEWMAC.

Game 1: Coast Guard 4, Babson 3 (10 inn.)
Graduate student Luke Tanner (Los Angeles, Calif.) knocked in a pair of runs, first-year Dante D'Avanzo (Ashland, Mass.) doubled and seven different players recorded a hit for the Beavers. Graduate student Greg Nieskens (Pine Brook, N.J.) earned a no-decision after giving up three runs to go along with six strikeouts over 7.1 innings, while junior Luke McClintock (South Hamilton, Mass.) suffered the loss after giving up a run on two hits in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.

Sophomore Richard Barkley (Bellevue, Wash.) went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBI, while junior Parker Madden (Ruston, La.) was 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored to lead the Bears' 10-hit attack. Sophomore Raymond Priddy (Chico, Calif.) tossed three shutout innings to move to 5-2 on the year with the win in relief of first-year Vito Giordano (Scarsdale, N.Y.), who struck out five and gave up three runs on six hits over 7.0 innings.

Nieskens recorded back-to-back strikeouts to strand a pair of Coast Guard runners in scoring position in the second and the Green and White took the lead in the fourth when D'Avanzo led off with a double and scored on an RBI single to left by senior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.). Babson added to it lead in the fifth as seniors Ike Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) and Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) reached with consecutive base hits and moved to third on a ground out before Tanner brough them both home with a two-out single to make it 3-0.

Nieskens retired the first two hitters in the bottom of the sixth before the Bears put together a two-out rally thanks to a hit batsman and four consecutive hits, including a two-run double to right by Barkley and an RBI single by senior John Tacchini (Klamath Falls, Ore.), to tie the game. Savage appeared to homer to lead off the top of the ninth before it was called foul and McClintock got a strikeout and ground out with the potential game-winning run at third in the bottom of the frame to send the game to extra innings.

McClintock retired back-to-back hitters after first-year Carson Cho (Haymarket, Va.) started the bottom of the 10th with a single, but Barkley smacked a two-out double to center to give the hosts a walk-off victory.

Game 2: Babson 6, Coast Guard 4 (10 inn.)
Savage was 2-for-2 with a homer, two walks, two RBI and two runs scored, Tanner doubled twice and scored a pair of runs, and D'Avanzo went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Green and White. Julian also had an RBI single, while sophomore Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) tossed three shutout innings of relief to improve to 4-1 on the year with the win.

Cho was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and two runs scored and Stafford singled twice and knocked in a pair of runs for the Bears. First-year Ryan Karman (Sayville, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs over 2.0 innings out of the bullpen.

The Beavers started fast as Tanner led off the game with a double, D'Avanzo followed with an RBI single and later scored on Kiely's sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Julian then led off the second with a solo homer to left, his second of the year, to make it 3-0.

Coast Guard cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fourth thanks to an RBI single by Tacchini and pulled even in the fifth as Cho came through with an RBI double and then scored on Stafford's single to center one batter later. First-year Alexander Wilson (Millburn, N.J.) cut down the potential go-ahead run for the second out of the seventh inning following a Cho single, but Cho stole second and scored on another RBI knock by Stafford to give the Bears a 4-3 edge.

Savage tied the game with a one-out homer to left in the top of the eighth and Teator retired six of the first seven hitters he faced before Babson went ahead for good in the 10th. Tanner started things off with a double to left and scored on D'Avanzo's RBI single to right, and he would come home on junior Justin Guest's (West Windsor, N.J.) RBI ground out late in the inning to make it a two-run game.

Madden doubled to left to bring the potential tying run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the 10th but Teator fanned Barkley to close out the win.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. as Babson visits Wheaton while Coast Guard takes on Springfield.
