Softball Splits Doubleheader at Emerson

BOSTON—Visiting Babson College had six players drive in a run in game one and split Saturday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader against Emerson College at Rotch Field. 

The Beavers won the opener 7-1 before dropping game two to the Lions, 6-1. Babson, which suffered just its third loss in the last 11 games, is now 16-15 overall and 7-7 in conference play. Emerson is 13-15 overall and 4-10 in the NEWMAC. 

Game 1: Babson 7, Emerson 0
Graduate student Cassidy Musco (Walpole, Mass.) and first-years Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) and Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) all finished with two hits apiece for the Beavers. Senior Moira' O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) struck out nine and gave up just one run in a complete-game effort on the way to winning her sixth consecutive decision to run her record to 10-7 overall. 

First-year Riley Caiazza (Schaghitcoke, N.Y.) and senior Claire Overton (Wayne, Pa.) each had two hits, while junior Sam Zanotti (Bolton, Conn.) doubled and scored for the Lions, who left 12 runners on base. Junior Jessica Gomez (West Chester, Pa.) shouldered the loss after allowing seven runs, just two of them earned, over 7.0 innings and is now 3-10 on the year. 

Junior Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) reached on an error to start the game and scored on Walsh's RBI single to center to give the Green and White an early 1-0 lead. Karamouzis homered to center to start the second, Musco followed with a double and raced home on Moore's sacrifice fly to extend the margin to 3-0. 

Musco's second double of the game brought home junior Athena Hadjipanayis (Rye, N.Y.) with one out in the sixth and first-year Ruby Madia (Princeton Junction, N.J.) drove home Karamouzis with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to give Babson a 5-0 advantage. The visitors then tacked on two more insurance runs in the seventh as graduate student Michaela Russell (Boston, Mass.) scored on an error after reaching with an infield single, while senior Molly Hennessy (Tallahassee, Fla.) came through with a two-out RBI single to make it a seven-run lead. 

Game 2: Emerson 6, Babson 1
Russell doubled and Hennessy, Musco and Raymond each singled for the Beavers, who were limited to just four hits in the nightcap. First-year Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) gave up five runs over 2.1 innings to fall to 6-8 on the year in the circle. 

Overton went 2-for-3 with a homer, a double, three RBI and two runs scored, while first-year Caleigh Sheehan (Bolton, Conn.) added a two-run double and struck out six in a complete-game effort in the circle to improve to 8-5. 

Emerson jumped in front 2-0 in the bottom of the first thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles by Overton and Gomez. Overton struck again the in the third as Overton hit a two-run bomb to left and Sheehan followed with a two-run double later in the inning to extend the Lions' lead to 6-0. 

Babson left runners on the corners in the fourth before getting on the board in the fifth as sophomore Allie Cubberly (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) pinch ran for Karamouzis and scored on a two-out error. Sheehan retired the side in order in the sixth and worked around a single by Hennessy and another error in the seventh to finish off her complete game. 

Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Endicott in a twin bill starting at 3 p.m., while Emerson visits MIT on Friday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.

GAME NOTES
•    The Beavers are 17-5 all-time against Emerson and have split each of the last two regular season doubleheaders between the teams. 
•    Raymond (10) and Hennessy (7) both extended their respective hitting streaks, while Russell has now reached base safely in 10 straight games. 
•    Babson has allowed two or fewer runs in 15 of its 16 victories this spring. 
•    The Beavers' four hits in game two are their fewest since March 13 when they finished with three in a 2-0 win over Carroll (Wis.).
