Softball Sweeps Endicott with Shutout in Opener and Walk-Off in Nightcap

O’Reilly Ties the Program Record with 19th Career Shutout in Game One

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Senior Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) tossed a two-hit shutout in the first game and graduate student Michaela Russell (Boston, Mass.) went 4-for-4 and delivered a two-out, two-run walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap as Babson College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Endicott College Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Beavers scored four runs in the first inning and went on to an 8-0 six-inning victory in the opener, and the second game had 20 hits and four lead changes culminating in a 9-8 Babson victory to secure the sweep. Babson has won five of its last six games to improve to 18-15 on the season,  while Endicott had a five-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 20-9 overall.

Game 1 – Babson 8, Endicott 0 (6 innings)

Junior Athena Hadjipanayis (Rye, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 with four stolen bases, an RBI and three runs scored to lead an 11-hit Beaver offense. First-year Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) had a single and a double and knocked in three, junior Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) had a single and a double and scored twice, and first-year Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) added two hits and an RBI in the win. Senior Molly Hennessy (Tallahassee, Fla.) brought home two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies.

Senior Christina Nowicki (Chelsea, Mass.) and sophomore Julianna Roche (North Andover, Mass.) accounted for the only two hits for the Gulls.
O'Reilly allowed just two hits and walked four while striking out nine to improve to 11-7 on the season. She put one batter on base in every inning but did not allow a runner past first base to record her seventh straight win in as many outings.

The Beavers struck early with four runs in the first inning. After Russell walked and Walsh singled, Raymond belted a two-run double to left field. Hadjipanayis followed with an RBI single to right to score Raymond, and Hadjipanayis then stole second and came around to score on an Endicott infield error.

Babson tacked on single runs in the second and third innings. Moore singled, stole second and scored on Raymond's single to left center in the second, and Hadjipanayis singled, stole second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hennessy.

The hosts put the game away with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Hadjipanayis led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Hennessy in the fifth, and Moore led off with a double in the sixth and came home with the game-clinching run on Walsh's single to right.

Game 2 – Babson 9, Endicott 8

Russell finished with three singles, a double, two stolen bases and three RBI for the Beavers, and graduate student Cassidy Musco (Walpole, Mass.) had two hits and scored twice. Hadjipanayis and Hennessy each drove in a run and graduate student Kate Karamouzis (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) reached base three times on a hit and a pair of walks. . First-year Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) went the distance in the circle to earn the win, allowing just three earned runs and striking out three.

First-year Hadley Marchand (Andover, Conn.) homered for the Gulls and junior Paige Berdos (Plainville, Mass.) had three hits, including a double, and three RBI. Nowicki and first-year Elyse Saccoccio (Coventry R.I.) had two hits apiece, and first-year Kristen Beebe (Brentwood, N.H.) struck out three in 3.2 innings of relief work in the circle but was saddled with the loss.

The Beavers took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Hadjipanayis and Hennessy's RBI single to left. The Gulls answered with three runs in the top of the fourth when Marchard belted a home run to right center, Berdos later added an RBI single and a third run scored on a Babson error.

The Green and White regained the lead with a pair of runs in the last of the fourth, one on an Endicott error and the second on Russell's RBI single to right center. The see-saw battle continued in the top of the fifth when the visitors plated four runs to take a 7-4 lead. Berdos had an RBI single in the rally and the other three runs were scored on an error, a passed ball and a wild pitch. Babson pulled back to within one run with two in the bottom of the fifth, one coming on a double steal and another on an attempted double steal.

Babson tied the game at 7-all in the bottom of the sixth after Russell doubled and later scored on a wild pitch, but Endicott went back into the lead in the top of the seventh when Nowicki led off with a double and later scored on Berdos' two-out double.

The winning rally in the bottom of the seventh inning started when Karamouzis walked with one out and Musco followed with an infield single. Moore walked to load the bases and Russell came through with the winning single to left center to bring home two runs.
