No. 14/9 Men’s Lacrosse Pulls Away from UMass Boston, 18-6

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Graduate student Jared Rainville (Watertown, Conn.) scored six goals and matched his season high with nine points as No. 14 USILA/No. 9 USA Lacrosse scored 13 times in the second half to pull away for an 18-6 win over visiting UMass Boston in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Tuesday night at rainy MacDowell Field.

Babson, which has won its last nine games at home, extended won its eighth straight contest to improve to 9-2 overall, while UMass Boston drops to 8-3 on the year with the loss.

Senior Christian Brofft (Pottstown, Pa.) and first-year Seamus Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.) tallied three goals and an assist each and sophomore Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.) added a goal and four assists for the Beavers. Senior Topher Bower (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in with three assists, classmate Ford Carney (Garden City, N.Y.) caused two turnovers and scooped up five ground balls, and fellow senior Dillon Quinn (Spring Lake, N.J.) ended up with two caused turnovers and four ground balls in the win.

Babson dominated the face-off X as graduate student James Turco (Woodbury, N.Y.) won 10-of-13 and senior Grey Sunderland (Bellevue, Wash.) garnered 9-of-14. Junior Alex Fascilla (Huntington, N.Y.) posted another strong performance in goal, finishing with 14 saves.

Senior Greg Wolff (Kingston, Mass.) led the Beacons with two goals and an assist, and seniors Charlie Chapman (Sandwich, Mass.) and Liam Bowler (Spencer, Mass.) and graduate students Zach Mann (South Hadley, Mass.) and Mic Flynn (Bellingham, Mass.) notched one goal each. Senior Justin McCullough (Waltham, Mass.) caused three turnovers and picked up four ground balls and grad student Patrick Carey (North Andover, Mass.) had a team-high five ground balls. First-year James Boldy (Hopedale, Mass.) had a busy night in goal, making 17 saves in the setback,

Junior Max Mallett (Alexandria, Va.) opened the scoring for Babson 5:27 into the contest, Sunderland won the ensuing face-off to set up Brofft's tally 51 seconds later and Rainville gave the Green and White a 3-0 lead with his first goal of the night with 6:30 left in the stanza. Chapman got UMass Boston on the board at the 3:07 mark but Smith answered with a man-up strike with 50 seconds to go in the period.

Wolff scored twice around Brofft's second goal of the night to pull the Beacons within 5-3 with 6:10 to go in the second before the Beavers responded with a four-goal run to start the third quarter. Rainville and Brofft scored just over a minute apart to make it 7-3 at the 10:24 mark, and Rainville followed with back-to-back tallies as Babson's lead swelled to 9-3 with 6:43 left in the frame.

Bowler got UMass Boston back within 9-4 with a man-up goal 31 seconds later but Rooney scored twice and first-year Luke Wang (Simsbury, Conn) notched his first marker of the night over the final 3:25 of the period to extend Babson's lead to 12-4. Rainville tacked on two more goals just 49 seconds apart early in the fourth and the trio of senior Connor Karsh (Glenview, Ill.), first-year Rowan Mondello (Wakefield, Mass.) and Rooney each tallied once in the span of 77 seconds to give the Green and White its largest lead of the night at 18-5 with 4:05 to play.

Babson finished with a 51-30 advantage in shots and won the ground ball battle, 40-28. Both teams went 1-for-3 with the extra man.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts Emerson at 4 p.m., while UMass Boston visits Massachusetts Maritime at 12 p.m.

  • Babson's eight-game winning streak is one shy of the program's single-season record of nine consecutive victories set back in 2016.
